On June 5, 2025, President Donald Trump threatened to terminate Elon Musk’s government subsidies and contracts during a public dispute over a Republican budget bill. The posts documented a threat, not completed contract cancellations. Musk briefly responded by saying SpaceX would decommission its Dragon spacecraft, then reversed that statement within hours.

What did Trump say about Musk’s government contracts?

Trump posted on Truth Social on June 5, 2025: “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” The House Congressional Record for that day quotes the post and records it as published at 2:37 p.m. (Congressional Record.)

The immediate context was Musk’s criticism of the Republican budget reconciliation bill. Roll Call reported that Trump said he was very disappointed in Musk’s criticism as the dispute escalated through posts by both men. (Roll Call.)

Trump’s phrase “Billions and Billions of Dollars” was his own characterization, not a verified estimate of savings. The cited materials do not establish a total value for contracts that were cancelled.

Was “he just went CRAZY” part of the contract threat?

No. Trump made the personal remark in a separate Truth Social post. He wrote that Musk had been “wearing thin,” that he had asked him to leave, and that he took away an EV mandate, adding, “and he just went CRAZY!” (CBS News.)

That wording reflects Trump’s account and characterization of their disagreement; it is not part of the contract-termination post. His reference to an “EV Mandate” should likewise be read as his description, not as a neutral identification of a specific policy instrument.

How did Musk respond, and what happened to the Dragon threat?

Musk replied on X: “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.” A few hours later, he posted: “Good advice. Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon.” (CBS News.)

The reversal means Musk’s post should not be treated as evidence that Dragon was actually decommissioned. CBS News reported that NASA relies on Crew Dragon to transport astronauts to the International Space Station; the spacecraft reference underscored the stakes Musk invoked, rather than documenting a change in service.

Did Trump actually terminate Musk’s government contracts?

The available contemporaneous reporting and the Congressional Record establish that Trump threatened termination; they do not establish that the contracts were subsequently cancelled. A threat in a social-media post is not itself a cancellation notice or evidence of a completed change to a government contract. The materials cited here do not provide federal contract records demonstrating that outcome.

For that reason, it would be inaccurate to describe this episode as Trump having cancelled Musk’s contracts or to present the president’s claimed potential savings as money actually saved. The documented event is the threat, Musk’s brief Dragon response and reversal, and the public dispute that followed.
