There is no reliable evidence that influencers are fleeing California as a group or that they share one reason for leaving. California has had sustained net out-migration, and housing costs are a major factor in moves by residents generally. But the public examples behind influencer-move claims describe different circumstances—and do not establish a common cause.
Are influencers leaving California in unusually large numbers?
The available figures track Californians overall, not influencers. They show substantial movement between California and other states, but cannot tell us how many creators moved, whether their moves are more common than before, or why they left.
From 2010 through 2024, nearly 10 million people moved from California to other states, while just over 7 million moved to California from elsewhere, according to American Community Survey data analyzed by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). The state has recorded net domestic out-migration every year since 2001, based on Department of Finance estimates reported by PPIC. Those broad totals establish a population trend, not an influencer trend.
What do the public influencer examples actually show?
Juris Magazine’s 2025 discussion highlights a small number of family creators, including Brittany Xavier and Savannah and Cole LaBrant. These accounts are anecdotes, not a representative count of influencers who moved.

- Brittany Xavier: The account says she cited health concerns after discovering mold in her California home.
- Savannah and Cole LaBrant: The account says their family moved to Tennessee before the statute discussed in the article and described wanting a “slower pace of life.”
The timing of the LaBrants’ move does not show that the later-discussed statute caused it. Nor does the available account connect Xavier’s move to that law. Online speculation about a creator’s motives should not be treated as a statement of fact.
Why do Californians move to other states?
Housing affordability is a major reported factor in broader migration, alongside work and family circumstances. These findings help explain why some Californians move; they do not establish why any particular influencer did.

- Since 2015, California had a net loss of almost 900,000 people who gave housing as their primary reason for moving, according to PPIC’s analysis of Current Population Survey data.
- In a PPIC statewide survey, 34% of Californians said they had seriously considered leaving because of high housing costs; 21% said they had seriously considered leaving because of a lack of well-paying jobs.
- In a separate analysis, California Policy Lab found that destination neighborhoods for California movers had average monthly housing costs $672 lower than the communities they left. That measure includes rent or mortgage payments, utilities, property taxes, and insurance, with estimates expressed in 2025 fourth-quarter dollars.
California Policy Lab co-executive director Evan White said broader movers are “moving to places where the overall housing costs are often 30 to 50% lower than in California,” in a Berkeley News interview published June 17, 2026. That observation is about movers generally, not influencers specifically.
Does moving automatically improve someone’s finances?
No. A lower housing bill can make a move attractive, but the financial result depends on the destination and the person’s circumstances. California Policy Lab’s analysis found that, seven years after leaving, movers were about 48% more likely—an 11-percentage-point difference—to own a home than similar Californians who stayed. The report describes an association, not proof that moving caused the difference, and says it cannot observe why individuals moved or how they chose their destinations.

Tax exposure also depends on the facts. California has no general exit tax, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s May 2024 explainer. However, people who retain sufficient ties may still be treated as California residents, and California-source income may remain taxable after a move. A change of address alone does not settle residency or tax questions.

Compare the full costs and practical trade-offs, rather than assuming that leaving California guarantees savings. The right destination depends on income, work arrangements, household needs, and where a person’s professional and family networks are located.

- Housing: Compare likely rent or mortgage costs, utilities, property taxes, insurance, and the cost of buying or selling a home.
- Taxes: Review state and local tax exposure as well as whether California residency rules or California-source income could still apply.
- Work and creator income: Consider job prospects, remote-work arrangements, travel needs, and proximity to clients, collaborators, and production networks.
- Family and community: Account for caregiving, schools, support networks, and the personal cost of distance.
- Moving costs: Include transport, deposits, temporary housing, and any costs involved in relocating a household or business.
PPIC reports that nearby states attract many California movers and that destination housing costs have become more salient as prices rise elsewhere. Its migration analysis also finds that higher-income Californians show a preference for states without income taxes, while affordability and proximity shape broader patterns. These are population-level patterns, not a ranking of the best places for creators.
