HBL announced the Konnect Islamic Account on 31 August 2022 as a branchless Islamic banking account. HBL now describes it as an account linked to your mobile number, which serves as the account number, and lists registration through the Konnect App, a Konnect Agent, an HBL Branch or USSD. HBL’s product pages also describe transfers, payments and an associated debit card, though terms and charges can change.
What is the HBL Konnect Islamic Account?
HBL describes Konnect Islamic as a branchless account linked to the customer’s mobile number; that number serves as the account number. Its current overview says the account supports RIBA-free transactions. The launch announcement said customers could open an account using a CNIC and mobile number. Check HBL’s current onboarding requirements before applying, as launch-era wording may not capture every current requirement. The 2022 announcement called the account “Pakistan’s only Branchless Banking Islamic Account.” That was HBL’s claim at launch, not a verified statement about today’s market, so it should not be read as proof that no comparable account is now available.
How can you open or register?
HBL’s current overview lists four registration routes, while its account-opening page specifically names the app and agent channels. Confirm the available route and current identity requirements with HBL when applying.

- Konnect Agent: HBL lists agent registration. At launch, the bank said agents could help people who could not open an account through the app, including people without a smartphone.

- Transfers: The account overview lists fund transfers. The account-opening page specifies transfers to CNICs, bank accounts or mobile accounts.
- Payments and top-ups: HBL lists bill payments, utility bill payments, mobile recharge, and mobile and internet top-ups.
- Other listed services: Donations and Zakat, tax filing, travel tickets, in-app shopping, QR payments, takaful plans and institutional payments appear on HBL’s pages.

How does the Konnect Islamic Debit Card fit in?
HBL announced the Konnect Islamic Debit Card on 8 February 2023. That launch release described cash withdrawals at HBL ATMs and contactless payments at point-of-sale terminals, with applications through the Konnect App or a Konnect agent. HBL’s debit card launch announcement
HBL’s current card page says new and existing Konnect Islamic L1 Account holders are eligible. It describes applying through the app and having the card delivered to a mailing address. The page lists free withdrawals at HBL ATMs and states a maximum of PKR 200,000 per month for free ATM withdrawals. It also mentions withdrawals and balance inquiries at other banks’ ATMs. These are HBL’s stated terms; check the page or ask HBL to confirm current eligibility, limits and any applicable charges before relying on them. What should you check about charges and terms?
HBL’s FAQ says transactions on the Konnect Islamic Account are subject to charges under the bank’s Islamic Schedule of Bank Charges. A surfaced Key Fact Statement is labeled October–December 2025, so it is a dated disclosure, not confirmation of the schedule in force in October 2026. In the 2022 launch announcement, Abrar Ahmed Mir, then HBL’s Chief Innovation & Financial Inclusion Officer, said: “We understand the need for shariah-compliant services is growing fast and we believe this service will help enhance inclusion.” Shahzad Babar, then Head Retail Banking Islamic at HBL, said: “All the Islamic products offered by HBL are approved by the Bank’s Shariah Board.” These are statements attributed to HBL executives in that announcement.
