Have I Been Pwned lists approximately 17.6 million Prosper accounts, but that is not a confirmed count of unique victims. Here is what Prosper disclosed and what readers should do.

Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) lists a Prosper breach involving approximately 17.6 million accounts. Prosper confirmed unauthorized activity in 2025 and later identified potentially exposed identity and financial information. However, the 17.6 million figure is an HIBP breach-database count—not a Prosper-confirmed count of 17.6 million unique people.

Prosper said it found no evidence that customer accounts or funds were accessed. The exposure can still create risks of identity theft, fraudulent credit applications, phishing, and targeted impersonation.

What HIBP is reporting

HIBP is a breach-notification service that lets people check whether an email address appears in known breach datasets. Its breach directory lists Prosper at approximately 17.6 million affected accounts.

In this context, “pwned” means that an email address or record appears in a breach dataset loaded by HIBP. It does not prove that every listed data field belongs to the same person, that Prosper login credentials were stolen, or that the searched person’s account was accessed.

A result showing Prosper is an exposure indicator. A negative result is not proof that no information was exposed: another email address, historical record, or data source may be involved.

HIBP’s API documentation explains how its breach data should be attributed when used elsewhere.

The reviewed disclosures also do not establish that Prosper passwords were stolen.

Who could be affected?

Prosper’s description refers to customer and applicant databases. Potentially affected people may therefore include current or former borrowers, applicants, cardholders, other Prosper users, and people whose information was retained historically. Do not assume that only active borrowers are relevant.

The HIBP count may include duplicate records, historical applications, outdated contact information, or records associated with one person across multiple accounts. It should not be converted directly into a count of unique victims.

How to check your exposure

  1. Check HIBP. Visit haveibeenpwned.com, enter the email address associated with Prosper, and look for a Prosper result. Do not enter a Social Security number, bank details, password, or government-ID number into the ordinary email lookup.
  2. Look for a direct Prosper notice. Prosper said it notified affected individuals by email or U.S. mail where available. Eligibility for the complimentary Experian service is based on Prosper’s notification process, not solely on an HIBP result.
  3. Review your credit reports. Use the official federally authorized source, AnnualCreditReport.com. Check for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, addresses, employers, collection activity, or credit applications.
  4. Contact Prosper independently if needed. Prosper’s notice lists 1-833-918-9464, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Central Time, excluding major U.S. holidays. Verify the number on Prosper’s official incident page before calling.

What to do now

1. Consider freezing your credit

If your Social Security number, national ID, driver’s-license information, or other identity data may have been exposed, a credit freeze is a strong preventive step. Request freezes directly from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

A freeze makes it harder to open new credit in your name and can be temporarily lifted when you apply legitimately. It does not stop account takeover, phishing, unauthorized bank transactions, or fraud involving existing accounts.

2. Monitor bank and card accounts

Review statements and transaction alerts for unfamiliar transfers, payments, cards, or changes to account details. Contact the financial institution through its official website or the number on your card if anything is suspicious.

3. Change reused passwords

The available disclosures do not establish that Prosper passwords were exposed. As a precaution, change your Prosper password if you still use the account, change any reused password elsewhere, use unique passwords, and enable multifactor authentication where available. Never give a caller or email sender a password or one-time code.

4. Expect targeted phishing

Scammers may mention a Prosper loan, payment, tax document, credit application, Experian enrollment, or identity-restoration service. Be especially suspicious of requests for a Social Security number, password, one-time code, bank transfer, or remote-access software.

Open Prosper’s official website or Experian’s official website independently rather than using links or phone numbers in an unexpected message. Prosper’s guidance also recommends caution when correspondence lacks expected account information or otherwise appears inconsistent with legitimate communication.

Credit monitoring, freezes, and HIBP are different

Resource What it does What it does not do
HIBP Checks whether an email appears in a listed breach dataset. It is not a full identity-monitoring service and does not show the complete stolen record.
Credit monitoring May alert you to some new accounts, inquiries, or credit-file changes. It may detect fraud after activity occurs and does not prevent every type of misuse.
Credit freeze Restricts prospective creditors from accessing your credit file. It does not stop phishing, existing-account fraud, or bank-account takeover.
Fraud alert Asks lenders to take additional steps to verify identity. It is less restrictive than a freeze.

What about lawsuits or compensation?

Prosper’s Q1 2026 filing says multiple purported class-action lawsuits related to the incident had been filed, with federal cases consolidated under In re: Prosper Funding, LLC Data Breach Litigation. It also reported state-court lawsuits and arbitration demands.

The existence of litigation does not establish liability or guarantee compensation. The reviewed sources do not establish a settlement or general claim process. Rely on official court notices or Prosper announcements, and avoid unofficial “claim” pages requesting sensitive information.
