Hasbro Laid Off Most of the Sigil VTT Team Weeks After Early Access Launch

Sigil’s team cuts followed early access by less than three weeks. Former design lead Andy Collins put the layoffs at about 30 developers, and Wizards now says the VTT will shut down after October 31, 2026.

Wizards of the Coast laid off most of the team behind Sigil, its 3D Dungeons & Dragons virtual tabletop, less than three weeks after the app entered early access. Former project design lead Andy Collins said about 30 developers—roughly 90% of the team—were affected, according to contemporaneous reports. That was an attributed estimate, not an official Hasbro workforce figure. Sigil is now scheduled to remain playable only through October 31, 2026; Wizards says its servers will then shut down and content made in Sigil will become inaccessible.

What happened to the Sigil VTT?

Sigil was Wizards of the Coast’s immersive 3D virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons, built with Unreal Engine 5. Players could create 3D dungeons, environments, and maps. It entered early access on February 28, 2025. On March 18, reports said Wizards had laid off the team working on it.

Rascal News reported that contractors were not included in its employee count. Andy Collins, identified by the outlet as the project’s de facto design lead, said approximately 30 developers—or 90% of the Sigil team—were laid off. Engadget also reproduced Collins’s statement. The figure is Collins’s characterization reported by those outlets, not a company-published or independently audited statistic.

Rascal News also reported, citing a screenshot of an internal staff message, that a skeleton crew would fold existing Sigil features into D&D Beyond. That was contemporaneous reporting; it should not be confused with a later official commitment about which features would carry over.

Why did Hasbro lay off the Sigil team?

Wizards’ current Sigil sunset FAQ says the company could not sustain the level of ongoing support or quality it believed players deserved. It says player feedback and lessons from Sigil would inform future digital D&D experiences.

In a 2026 interview with GamesRadar, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks gave a more specific technical explanation: Sigil’s system requirements were too high, and the app struggled with many objects unless a user had a very high-end gaming PC. He described Maps as a route for bringing some Sigil ideas into a 2D, browser-based experience intended to work on an iPad or a lower-end Windows PC. Those are Cocks’s explanation and stated direction, not a published benchmark or a confirmed compatibility list or release schedule.

How Sigil differs from D&D Maps

Sigil and Maps serve different tabletop workflows. Wizards describes Sigil as a 3D environment-building tool; D&D Beyond’s Maps is a 2D tabletop designed as a more streamlined experience, with automated rules and a helpful interface.

Comparison Sigil D&D Maps
Format and workflow Immersive 3D world-building for dungeons, environments, and maps. 2D tabletop with a more streamlined, rules-assisted workflow.
Device direction Official FAQ listed PC-only access and Windows PC requirements, including a GTX 960, R9 380, or Intel UHD GPU minimum. Cocks said the browser-based experience was intended to run on an iPad or lower-end Windows PC; this was a stated goal, not verified compatibility guidance.
Service status Scheduled to remain playable through October 31, 2026, then shut down. Described by Cocks as the direction for taking some Sigil concepts forward; no specific release schedule was stated in the interview.

Sigil’s published minimums also included Windows 10 64-bit, a Core i3-3225, and 8 GB RAM. Its recommended configuration was substantially stronger, including an RTX 2080- or Radeon RX 6600 XT-class GPU, 8 GB VRAM, a Core i5-7300U- or Ryzen 3 3300U-class processor, 16 GB RAM, and an NVMe SSD. These are legacy product requirements, not a sensible basis for buying a PC now that the service is ending.

When does Sigil shut down, and what happens to campaigns?

Wizards says Sigil will remain playable through October 31, 2026. After that, its servers will shut down, creations will not be transferred elsewhere, and content made in Sigil will no longer be accessible. That means users should not count on being able to open their campaigns, maps, or other creations after the service ends.

Save what you want to keep

The official FAQ recommends taking screenshots of images users want to preserve and copying important notes and journal entries outside Sigil. Make those copies before the shutdown date; the FAQ does not promise a migration or export that will keep creations usable in another platform.

Account benefits and digital items

The FAQ says all registered D&D Beyond users have access to a Sigil Dragon character-sheet background. A previously offered six-month complimentary Master Tier subscription is no longer claimable: it applied to people who used paid or trial Master Tier to access Sigil at least once between March 1 and October 23, 2025, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, and its redemption deadline was January 6, 2026.

Sigil marketplace content is also subject to the sunset. The D&D Beyond Marketplace listing for the Stand in Line Pack identifies it as digital Sigil content and says it will no longer be accessible after the service ends. It should not be treated as a durable purchase.
