Harvard Tuition-Free for Families Earning Up to $200,000: What It Covers

Harvard’s expanded need-based aid can cover tuition for families earning up to $200,000 with typical assets, but other costs may remain. Here’s how the thresholds, 2026–27 costs, and individual aid estimates work.

Starting in the 2025–26 academic year, Harvard College’s expanded need-based aid program covers the full tuition charge for families earning up to $200,000 a year when they have typical assets. Families with typical assets and income up to $100,000 may receive aid covering all billed costs. The income thresholds are not automatic guarantees: Harvard reviews assets and other circumstances, and tuition-free does not necessarily mean a zero bill for housing, food, or fees.

What does “tuition-free” mean at Harvard?

Harvard considers a student tuition-free when the grant in the student’s aid package covers the full annual tuition charge. Other billed costs may remain, depending on the family’s circumstances and award. Harvard’s financial aid FAQ distinguishes tuition coverage from coverage of the full cost of attendance.

The expanded threshold began in academic year 2025–26. For families with typical assets and annual income up to $200,000, Harvard says aid covers at least the full cost of tuition. For families with typical assets and income up to $100,000, aid may cover all billed costs. The precise package is based on an individual review, not income alone. Harvard College Dean David J. Deming described the policy in a 2025 Family Weekend message: “I’m proud to say that Harvard College is tuition free for households making up to $200,000 per year, which is more than 9 in 10 American families.” Harvard’s aid materials qualify that threshold by typical assets and individualized assessment; the “more than 9 in 10” comparison is Deming’s statement.

What does Harvard cost before financial aid?

For 2026–27, Harvard lists $91,634 in billed costs before aid. Health insurance is listed separately and may be an additional charge if a student is not covered under a family plan.

Fees $6,216
Housing $14,250
Food $8,942
Total billed costs before aid $91,634
Health insurance, listed separately $4,954

These are Harvard’s published 2026–27 sticker-price figures, not a prediction of what an aided student’s family will pay. A student covered through a family health plan may not need to pay Harvard’s separately listed insurance charge. See Harvard’s cost of attendance for the published figures.

How does Harvard decide who qualifies?

Harvard College aid is need-based, not merit-based. Harvard says it meets 100% of demonstrated need, assessing income, assets, expenses, and other financial circumstances. Families with significant assets may be expected to contribute more even when their income falls within a stated threshold. Harvard typically does not count home equity and retirement assets in its assessment. Families earning more than $200,000 may still qualify for aid based on their situation.

As a result, the thresholds are useful signposts, not a way to calculate an individual award. A household’s income by itself cannot establish whether tuition, fees, housing, or food will be covered.

How can a family estimate its actual cost?

  1. Use Harvard’s Net Price Calculator to get an estimate based on the family’s own financial information.
  2. Review Harvard’s financial-aid application instructions for the materials and steps required to apply.
  3. Ask Harvard’s financial-aid office about circumstances the calculator may not capture or questions about an award.

Harvard says applying for aid does not jeopardize admission, including for international applicants. The calculator and aid application—not the headline income bands—are the relevant routes to an individualized estimate.

What aid figures does Harvard report?

Harvard’s 2026 one-page financial aid sheet reports that 55% of students receive aid and 25% attend Harvard College for free; the sheet says these figures reflect the most recent academic year. It also states that 100% of students can graduate debt-free. That program figure does not mean every student has no other financial obligation. Harvard’s Financial Aid Fact Sheet describes two-thirds of students working during the academic year as a typical-year figure. These are Harvard-reported figures, with the time frames Harvard specifies.
