In a TikTok account described by PerthNow on 1 September 2024, 27-year-old content creator and hospitality worker Hannah Clare said she had taken on extra work to cover rent, food and electricity—and felt she could no longer remember her last day off. Her story is a personal account of financial pressure, not a measure of what Australians generally spend or earn.
What Hannah Clare said in the TikTok report
PerthNow reported that Clare spoke about working every day to pay rent, buy food and keep the electricity running. The outlet quoted her saying: “I cannot remember the last time I had a day off.”
She also described the strain of trying to afford a social life and “nice things,” asking how people had the time and money for them “in this economy in this day and age.” Her concerns, as reported, included fatigue as well as the cost of essentials and limited room for leisure.
Her reported grocery budget and café comparison
PerthNow said Clare put her weekly grocery budget at $20–$30, quoting her: “My budget for groceries a week is 20 to 30 dollars, that’s all I have for groceries a week”. She contrasted that with her observation that people were spending $50 on a café meal.

Those figures describe Clare’s account and comparison in the report; they are not a survey of grocery or café spending. The story was published on 1 September 2024, so it should not be used as a guide to current Australian food prices or household budgets.
What the multiple-job statistic does—and does not—show
PerthNow attributed to the Australian Bureau of Statistics a figure of 6.7 per cent of employed people in Australia holding multiple jobs in March 2024. The report also said women were more likely than men to hold multiple jobs and that people aged 20–24 were the most likely age group.
The original ABS release is not established here, so these figures and demographic comparisons should be attributed to PerthNow rather than presented as independently verified ABS findings. In any case, a national multiple-job rate does not show why a particular person takes extra work, or establish how typical Clare’s financial circumstances were.

Clare’s account gives a concrete picture of the pressures she said she faced: paying for housing and utilities, keeping food on the table, and having little time or money left for social activities. It is useful as an individual description of those pressures, but it cannot establish current living costs, the prevalence of hardship, or what most workers can afford.
