The latest verified official Hang Seng Index (HSI) figure available is the 7 October 2026 close: 24,130.50, down 150.06 points (0.62%) from the previous close. It is not a verified live quote for 8 October: Hang Seng Indexes warned that a system outage was delaying displayed index values. The figures below are dated to the 7 October session, with the official page updated at 16:09 Hong Kong time.

Hang Seng Index today: latest verified figures

Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited’s latest verified session data available at 13:08 HKT on 8 October 2026 is for Wednesday, 7 October. The provider’s index page showed the session figures below and was updated at 16:09 HKT.

7 October 2026 HSI measure Value
Close 24,130.50
Change from previous close −150.06 points (−0.62%)
Previous close 24,280.56
Session high 24,266.92
Session low 24,071.41

Hang Seng Indexes’ HSI details page is the primary source for these values. Because the provider reported a delay caused by a system outage, do not treat the 7 October close as the current 8 October level; a verified 8 October performance figure is not established here.

What the Hang Seng Index measures

The HSI is a Hong Kong stock-market benchmark. Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited describes it as “the most widely quoted indicator of the performance of the Hong Kong stock market.” The index was publicly launched on 24 November 1969. It is one indicator of market performance, not a measure of every Hong Kong-listed share or a prediction of future returns.

At the time of the provider’s displayed snapshot, the HSI had 95 constituents. Membership and the count can change, so that figure should be read as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent feature. The provider groups its constituents into four sector sub-indexes: Finance, Utilities, Properties, and Commerce and Industry.

How the four HSI sector sub-indexes performed

The official provider’s 7 October readings showed a mixed session across sectors:

Sector sub-index 7 October change
Finance −0.59%
Utilities +0.10%
Properties +1.00%
Commerce and Industry −0.77%

Property and utilities rose while finance and commerce and industry fell. These sector moves provide context, but they do not by themselves establish why the overall HSI declined.

Why did the HSI move?

A TA Research daily brief published on 8 October reported that regional investors were responding to bond-market pressure, Federal Reserve meeting minutes, and oil-related inflation concerns. The brief also noted the HSI’s 0.62% fall in the prior session. Those are reported regional themes, not verified causal explanations for the HSI’s move on 7 October; the available information does not establish a single driver for the decline.

Price index versus total-return indexes

The headline HSI is a price index. It is distinct from dividend-inclusive total-return series, which account for dividends under their respective methodologies. On 7 October, Hang Seng Indexes displayed a gross total-return index value of 88,539.87 and a net total-return index value of 85,946.64; both were down 0.62% that session. These series have different index levels from the price index and should not be compared as though they were interchangeable quotes.

Where to check official HSI updates

For daily movements and additional index information, Hang Seng Indexes provides an Index Daily Bulletin and other index reports. Its official homepage carried the delayed-update notice relevant to the 8 October snapshot. When checking a daily figure, confirm the session date and update time, and distinguish the regular price index from total-return versions.
