A report dated 10 October 2026 says the GST portal has opened GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C filing for FY 2025-26 and displays 31 December 2026 as the deadline. Because no matching GSTN advisory confirming this year’s opening was located, treat that status as secondary reporting and verify it on the GST portal before filing. The legal framework sets 31 December following the financial year as the due date, unless the deadline is extended.
What is reported about FY 2025-26 filing?
A2Z Taxcorp LLP reported on 10 October 2026 that the portal had enabled the FY 2025-26 annual-return forms and showed 31 December 2026 as the due date. This is a secondary report, not a located GSTN announcement. Check the live portal for the current availability and displayed deadline; the material available here does not establish whether a later notification or extension has changed either.

For context only, the prior-year GSTN advisory, reproduced by the Maharashtra GST Department, stated that FY 2024-25 GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C were enabled on 12 October 2025. That prior-year date does not confirm the FY 2025-26 opening.
How GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C differ
| Form | Purpose | Who it applies to | Certification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSTR-9 | Annual return | Applicable registered persons, subject to statutory exclusions and current-year rules | Annual return; check the current form instructions |
| GSTR-9C | Reconciliation statement filed with the annual return | Covered registered persons whose aggregate turnover exceeds ₹5 crore in the financial year, subject to exclusions | Self-certified under Rule 80 |
These descriptions follow CBIC’s Rule 80. The threshold alone is not a complete eligibility test: the rule excludes certain categories, and current notifications or amendments may affect who must file.

Who must file GSTR-9C?
CBIC Rule 80 requires covered registered persons with aggregate turnover exceeding ₹5 crore in the financial year to furnish a self-certified GSTR-9C with the annual return. Determine whether the statutory exclusions apply to your registration before treating turnover as decisive. Check the current rule text and any relevant notifications for FY 2025-26 rather than relying on the threshold in isolation.
What must be filed before the annual-return tile is enabled?
GSTN’s official FAQ for FY 2024-25 says all due GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns for that year must be filed before the GSTR-9/9C tile becomes enabled; a pending return can prevent GSTR-9 from being enabled. This is confirmed prior-year guidance, not a verified FY 2025-26 instruction. If the tile is unavailable, first check for outstanding applicable GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings, then consult the current portal guidance.

How to prepare before filing
- Check portal availability and current instructions. Sign in to the GST portal and confirm the FY 2025-26 GSTR-9/9C filing tile, applicable forms and displayed due date. The FY 2025-26 opening claim is supported here by secondary reporting rather than a located GSTN advisory.
- Clear applicable pending returns. Confirm that all due GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns for FY 2025-26 have been filed. GSTN’s cited prerequisite guidance is for FY 2024-25, so verify the current-year portal instructions as well.
- Check GSTR-9C applicability. Assess aggregate turnover for the financial year and check whether a statutory exclusion or current notification affects your filing obligation.
- Reconcile the annual disclosures. Compare the figures to source returns and books before filing. GSTN’s FY 2024-25 FAQ describes auto-population from filed statements and returns, including GSTR-1/1A/IFF, GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B. Those details are prior-year guidance; confirm the FY 2025-26 form instructions and do not assume the same tables or data treatment.
- Submit using the current-year process. Follow the portal’s FY 2025-26 instructions for completing and filing the forms. The available material does not establish this year’s table changes, updated exemptions or any extension beyond the reported date.
