GST Return Filing FAQs: Due Dates, GSTR-1 Corrections and Input Tax Credit

GSTR-1 dates vary by filing frequency and extensions. Learn how GSTR-1A corrections work, when supplier changes reach GSTR-2B and what to verify before claiming ITC.

GST return deadlines depend on your filing frequency, return period and any government extension. For GSTR-1, the GST Portal lists the 11th of the following month for monthly filers and the 13th of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers as standard dates. Corrections, recipient-side GSTR-2B timing and input tax credit (ITC) eligibility follow separate rules, so check the portal for your period and reconcile your records before filing.

What is the due date for filing GSTR-1?

The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 guide gives these standard due dates:

Filing frequency Standard GSTR-1 due date How to apply it
Monthly 11th of the succeeding month For the tax period, look to the following month.
Quarterly 13th of the month after the quarter ends For the quarter, look to the month after quarter-end.

These are the portal’s standard dates, not a guarantee of the deadline for a particular period: the guide says the government may extend them by notification. Its examples are historical and should not be treated as upcoming deadlines. Check the return period and due date shown on the GST Portal, along with any applicable notification.

What is the GSTR-3B due date?

GSTR-3B is the return in which taxpayers report liability and ITC. A single quarterly due date should not be assumed for every filer: the CBIC’s CGST Rules compilation describes a framework in which quarterly deadlines can differ according to the principal place of business. That PDF is a 2020 compilation, so it is not enough to establish a current deadline by itself.

Can I edit GSTR-1 or add a missed invoice?

Before filing GSTR-1

Uploaded invoice details remain in draft until the statement is filed. The GST Portal guide says you can modify or delete those details while they are still in draft. Review the entries before filing, because the post-filing process is different.

After filing: use GSTR-1A for the same period

GSTR-1A is an optional, one-time opportunity to amend or add records for the same tax period. It becomes available after GSTR-1 has been filed or its due date has arrived, whichever is later, and it must be filed before GSTR-3B for that period. The GST Portal guide describes it as an amendment return for GSTR-1.

  1. Review the filed GSTR-1 and identify the incorrect or missing record.
  2. When GSTR-1A is available for that period, make the necessary amendment or addition.
  3. File GSTR-1A once, before filing GSTR-3B for the same period.

GSTR-1A changes the supplier’s reported information; it does not by itself establish that the recipient may claim ITC. The recipient should reconcile the resulting statement and assess credit under the applicable rules.

What is the cut-off date to amend details for the previous financial year?

The GST Portal guide states that errors or omissions for a previous financial year cannot be rectified after 30 November of the following financial year, subject to the governing statutory text and any applicable amendment or extension. Treat this as the portal’s stated framework, not as an individually confirmed deadline. The applicable financial year, current law and any later notification matter. The CBIC CGST Act text is a statutory reference, but the retrieved consolidated presentation may not reflect every later change.

When does a supplier’s GSTR-1A change appear in the recipient’s GSTR-2B?

According to the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B FAQs, information declared or amended by a supplier through GSTR-1A becomes available to the recipient in the next tax period’s GSTR-2B. The supplier’s amendment and the recipient’s statement are therefore not necessarily same-period events.

GSTR-2B incorporates specified records from supplier GSTR-1, IFF and GSTR-1A, among other returns, and is intended to help the recipient report ITC in GSTR-3B. Check the relevant GSTR-2B and reconcile it with your purchase records before deciding what to claim.

Does GSTR-2B alone prove that I can claim ITC?

No. GSTR-2B is a reconciliation input, not conclusive proof that a particular credit is eligible. The CGST Act sets conditions and restrictions, and a credit claim depends on the transaction, supporting records, current rules and the taxpayer’s circumstances.

Because that consolidated presentation may not include every current amendment or special rule, verify the current provision before relying on a date.

Use the CBIC CGST Act text as a statutory reference, and assess the current law and transaction documents rather than treating a GSTR-2B entry as automatic entitlement.

Do I have to file GSTR-1 if there was no business activity?

The GST Portal guide says GSTR-1 is required even when there was no business activity during the tax period. It also describes filing dependencies and blocks tied to unfiled earlier returns, including dependencies between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Because requirements can depend on taxpayer category, check the returns dashboard for your registration and the rules that apply to it.

What should I check before filing?

  1. Confirm the return period and whether your registration files monthly or quarterly.
  2. Check the GST Portal for the due date shown for that period and any current extension notification.
  3. Review draft GSTR-1 records and correct errors before filing where possible.
  4. After filing GSTR-1, check whether GSTR-1A is available and whether a same-period correction is needed before GSTR-3B.
  5. Reconcile GSTR-2B with invoices, receipt of supply and other records before reporting ITC in GSTR-3B.
  6. Check the return dashboard for any earlier returns that must be filed before you can proceed.
