If you deliberately want to tilt your portfolio toward companies classified as growth, a growth ETF may fit—but “growth ETF” does not identify one standard index or one uniform set of holdings. The right choice depends on the fund’s benchmark, its overlap with investments you already own, its costs and risks, and the role you want it to play.
What is the difference between growth ETFs and S&P 500 ETFs?
An S&P 500 ETF seeks to track the S&P 500, an index of large U.S. companies. It is a broad large-cap holding, not a complete representation of the U.S. stock market: it does not provide the same coverage as a fund spanning small- and mid-cap companies, and it does not include international stocks.

A growth ETF targets companies that an index provider classifies as growth stocks. Its benchmark might select growth-classified companies from the S&P 500, or it might use a different universe and classification method. The result can be a narrower or otherwise different portfolio from an S&P 500 fund. The label alone does not tell you which companies the fund owns, how it weights them, or how often the index is rebalanced.
For example, IVW tracks the S&P 500 Growth Index, a growth subset of the S&P 500. VOOG is another fund tracking a growth segment of the S&P 500. VUG, by contrast, tracks the CRSP US Large Cap Growth Index; it is not simply the S&P 500 with a growth screen applied. These funds should not be treated as interchangeable: their benchmarks and screening rules differ.

How do the benchmarks classify growth?
Index methodology matters because it determines which companies qualify and how the portfolio is constructed. IVW’s prospectus describes growth classification using three-year earnings-per-share growth relative to price, three-year sales-per-share growth, and 12-month price momentum. A company’s classification under one provider’s rules need not match another provider’s classification.
With an S&P 500 growth-subset fund, the starting universe is the S&P 500 and the index then selects or weights growth-classified names according to its rules. A broad large-cap growth index such as VUG’s CRSP benchmark starts from a different index universe. Consequently, two growth ETFs can differ in eligible holdings, weights, sector exposures, turnover, and performance even when both use “growth” in their names.
Before buying, read the fund’s prospectus or fact sheet for its exact benchmark. Then check the issuer’s current holdings and sector weights if available. An index name is more informative than a category label, but it still does not substitute for checking what the fund currently owns.

What will each option cost?
An expense ratio is the fund’s annual operating expense as a percentage of assets. At the cited rates, 0.03% is about $3 per year for each $10,000 invested, 0.07% about $7, and 0.18% about $18, assuming the balance stays at $10,000 for the year and the rate does not change. These arithmetic examples illustrate the percentage; they are not a prediction of the account’s actual expense or return.
The ratio is not the entire cost of investing. Buying and selling shares can involve a bid-ask spread and, depending on the brokerage and transaction, a commission or other charge. A fund’s portfolio trading can also create costs that are outside its expense ratio. In taxable accounts, distributions and sales may affect taxes; the effect depends on the investor’s circumstances and the fund’s activity. Check the current prospectus, brokerage terms, and account rules rather than assuming the expense ratio is the all-in cost.
Turnover is one clue about how much a fund’s holdings changed during a reporting period, but it is not itself a fee and does not directly state a dollar cost. Vanguard reported 12% portfolio turnover for VUG’s most recent fiscal year in its 2026 prospectus. The July 2026 IVW prospectus reported 22% for its most recent fiscal year. These are fund-specific reported figures for the periods in those filings; they should not be used as a complete measure of trading expenses or as a guarantee of future turnover.

How do risk and diversification differ?
A growth fund adds a style decision to the underlying stock-market exposure. Growth investing can underperform other stock funds using a different style. It may also leave the portfolio more sensitive to the largest holdings or to sectors with substantial representation in the index. VUG’s prospectus specifically discusses technology-sector, concentration, index-tracking, and ETF trading risks. Its shares may trade at a premium or discount to net asset value, so an exchange price can differ from the value of the underlying holdings.
A broad S&P 500 ETF spreads exposure across more companies than a growth subset of that same index, but it is still concentrated in large U.S. equities. It can fall substantially when the broader large-company U.S. market declines. “Broad” in this comparison means broad relative to a style subset, not risk-free or diversified across every asset class, country, or company size.
Owning a growth fund alongside an S&P 500 ETF does not necessarily add much diversification. The funds can own many of the same large companies, with the growth ETF assigning greater weight to those meeting its style criteria. Review actual holdings and weights rather than counting tickers or funds. If a growth fund increases exposure to companies already prominent in your core holding, the result may be a stronger tilt rather than a new source of diversification.

- Tracking and trading risk: A fund may not match its benchmark exactly, and ETF shares can trade above or below net asset value.

Which fits my investing goals?
Consider a broad S&P 500 ETF for a large-cap U.S. core
This approach may fit if the job you want the holding to do is represent large U.S. companies without deliberately overweighting a growth classification. It is a straightforward way to target the S&P 500, but it does not replace international, small-company, bond, or other exposures if those are part of your plan. Whether it is enough diversification depends on the rest of your portfolio and your objectives.
Consider a growth ETF for an intentional tilt
A growth fund may fit if you have decided to overweight growth-classified companies and can accept the possibility that this style will lag other stock exposures. Choose based on the specific benchmark and holdings—not on a belief that “growth” means faster returns, less risk, or guaranteed outperformance. A growth ETF can be used as a complement to a core holding, but its overlap and resulting concentration should be deliberate.
Be cautious about choosing from recent returns
VUG’s April 2026 SEC-filed summary prospectus reports before-tax NAV returns for periods ended December 31, 2025: 19.44% for one year, 14.63% annualized for five years, and 17.45% annualized for ten years. The CRSP benchmark figures shown for the same periods are 19.48%, 14.67%, and 17.49%, respectively. These are historical figures for VUG and its benchmark, not a current forecast and not a like-for-like comparison with a broad S&P 500 ETF.
For any performance comparison, align the measurement end date, the period, the return convention, and the benchmark. NAV returns and market-price returns are not necessarily identical, and comparisons across different dates can mislead. Vanguard’s prospectus says, “Past performance (before and after taxes) does not indicate how the Fund will perform in the future.” Past returns cannot establish which style will do better next.

A practical way to choose
- Define the job. Write down whether the investment is meant to be a core large-cap U.S. holding or a deliberate growth tilt. If you cannot distinguish the intended role, pause before adding another fund.
- Identify the benchmark. Read the fund’s prospectus or fact sheet and confirm the exact index. Determine whether it is the S&P 500, a growth subset of that index, or another large-cap growth benchmark.
- Inspect holdings and overlap. Compare the prospective fund’s current largest holdings and sector weights with the funds you already own. Consider whether you are adding different exposure or increasing the weight of the same companies.
- Compare ongoing and trading costs. Check the current expense ratio and turnover disclosure, then account for your brokerage’s trading terms, bid-ask spreads, possible tax effects, and account type.
- Test your tolerance for underperformance. Ask whether you would keep the fund if its style lagged the broad market for a prolonged period. If that would prompt you to abandon your plan, a growth tilt may be a poor fit.
- Set a portfolio weight and review rule. Decide how much of the portfolio the holding should represent and under what conditions you would rebalance. Avoid letting a recent run-up alone dictate the allocation.
Income, taxes, and account context
Neither “growth” nor “S&P 500” tells you exactly how much income a fund will distribute. Distributions depend on the underlying companies and fund activity, and they can change. If current income is a priority, compare each fund’s latest distribution information and prospectus rather than assuming a growth label means no distributions or that a broad index fund has a particular yield.
Tax outcomes depend on what the fund distributes, whether you sell shares at a gain or loss, the account type, and applicable tax rules. Turnover can contribute to trading activity but does not alone determine an investor’s tax bill. Before acting in a taxable account, consider the fund’s distribution history and the tax treatment relevant to your situation; a tax-advantaged account may have different immediate tax consequences. The fund label by itself is not a tax strategy.
What to verify before placing an order
- Confirm the exact fund name and ticker; similar-sounding growth funds may track different indices.
- Check the latest prospectus for benchmark, objective, risks, expense ratio, and turnover.
- Review current holdings and sector weights on the issuer’s fund page if concentration matters to your decision.
- Check the ETF’s market price, bid-ask spread, and net asset value information through your brokerage before trading.
- Make sure the purchase fits the role and risk level of your full portfolio, not just the recent performance of one fund.
This is general educational information, not personalized investment or tax advice. Fund documents and issuer listings can change; verify current details before investing.
