The Groupon–Google Pay partnership was real, but the “you’ll soon see” headline is historical—not current U.S. product guidance. Groupon announced a plan on November 2, 2021, to make local experiences and travel offers available through the Google Pay app, with a planned launch in the first half of 2022. Google later ended the standalone Google Pay app in the United States on June 4, 2024. The available announcements do not confirm the integration’s final rollout or a move to Google Wallet.
What Groupon and Google announced
On November 2, 2021, Groupon announced a U.S. distribution partnership with Google. The plan was to give Google Pay app users in-app access to Groupon marketplace offers, particularly local experiences and travel inventory. Groupon described the selection as thousands of offers. The companies said the arrangement was intended to help users find experiences and help merchants reach customers. Groupon’s announcement set the expected launch window in the first half of 2022.

This was a distribution arrangement: Groupon inventory was to be surfaced through Google Pay. It was not announced as an acquisition, an exclusive-deal program, or a replacement for Groupon’s marketplace. The announcement did not promise that every Groupon category or offer would appear in the app.

The announcement described a way to discover and access Groupon offers from Google Pay. It did not say that Google Pay would automatically apply Groupon discounts or take over Groupon’s checkout. Nor did it establish that Google would process purchases or that offers would be exclusive to Google Pay.

- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.

- Just the app you’re looking for: Millions of apps means millions of ways to get things done, learn something new, and maybe even meet someone special.
The release also left practical details unspecified: whether shoppers would need a Groupon account, whether purchases would finish inside Google Pay or on Groupon, and where vouchers, refunds, and customer support would be handled. A contemporaneous Droid Life report likewise noted that the precise in-app presentation was not yet known.
Why the headline is outdated for U.S. users
Google announced on February 22, 2024, that its standalone Google Pay app in the United States would stop being available beginning June 4, 2024. Google directed users to Google Wallet for payment cards and tap-to-pay, and said users could find deals and offers through Google Search. Those changes mean the original U.S. plan cannot be treated as a feature currently coming to the discontinued standalone app. Google’s announcement does not say that Groupon’s inventory moved to Wallet. Google’s payment-app update also said that the U.S. change did not affect Google Pay app users in India and Singapore; the 2021 Groupon announcement itself was U.S.-focused.

Google Pay, Google Wallet, Search, and Groupon are different things
| Product or surface | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Google Pay app in the U.S. | The standalone app whose availability ended June 4, 2024. |
| Google Wallet | Google’s U.S. wallet app for payment cards and tap-to-pay; no cited announcement confirms that Groupon deals migrated there. |
| Google Pay checkout | A payment option that may appear on supported websites or apps. Using it to pay is not the same as browsing Groupon deals inside Google Pay. |
| Google Search | The destination Google identified for finding deals and offers after the U.S. app change. |
| Groupon website or app | Groupon’s own marketplace for browsing offers and reviewing purchase and redemption terms. |
How to find or pay for a Groupon deal now
- Browse Groupon directly. Use the Groupon website or its app to see current marketplace inventory.
- Check the individual offer before buying. Review its location, expiration date, redemption rules, and merchant terms; availability and restrictions can vary by listing.
- Use Google Pay only if checkout offers it. Groupon’s payment guidance says Google Pay may be available on compatible devices and in supported locations. That payment compatibility does not establish an in-app deal-discovery integration.
- For Google-discovered deals, use Search. Google identified Search as its deals-and-offers route for U.S. users in its app-transition announcement.
What is and is not confirmed about the rollout
The official announcement verifies the partnership and its planned first-half-2022 timing. The available sources do not verify an exact launch date, the final interface, how widely the feature rolled out, whether it continued after the U.S. app ended, or whether it migrated to Google Wallet. That is not proof that the partnership was canceled or never launched; it means those outcomes are not established by the cited announcements. Treat “soon” as wording from the 2021 news, not as a promise about current availability.
