P/E divides a company’s share price by earnings per share. It is a shorthand for how the market price compares with a measure of earnings, but it is meaningful only when the earnings denominator and reporting basis are understood. AD HOC NEWS gives 17.09 without saying whether it is trailing, forward-looking, or calculated on another basis. Treat it as the article’s stated multiple, not as a fully specified valuation measure.
#1 Best Overall
The article also reports year-to-date performance of +1.75% for Grasim and −13.84% for the Nifty 50. Those figures are dated comparisons reported by the same article; they do not establish why either value changed or predict future returns.
Why Grasim is not a single-industry business
Grasim Industries describes itself as an Aditya Birla Group flagship and diversified company. Its activities span cellulosic fibres, chemicals, building materials including cement and decorative paints, B2B e-commerce, financial services and other businesses. Its consolidated results and valuation therefore reflect several business lines rather than one pure-play industry exposure.

For fiscal year 2026, Grasim reported consolidated revenue of ₹1,75,431 crore and EBITDA of ₹25,872 crore. For Q4FY26, it reported revenue of ₹51,101 crore and EBITDA of ₹8,011 crore. These are company-reported fiscal-period results, not market figures from the October 13 share-price snapshot. The company’s FY26 release also highlighted growth in paint revenue, cellulosic fibre, chemical sales volumes, cement capacity, B2B e-commerce and financial-services lending portfolio.

How to read the peer P/E comparison
The AD HOC NEWS article lists P/E figures of 37.05 for UltraTech Cement and 47.83 for Asian Paints alongside Grasim’s 17.09. The article does not specify the earnings period or calculation convention for these multiples. The companies also have different business mixes: the comparison does not control for segment exposure, earnings growth, profitability or market capitalization.
On those terms, the figures are only a dated comparison as presented by the article. A lower reported P/E alone does not prove that Grasim is cheap, or that either peer is expensive. A like-for-like assessment would need a consistent earnings basis, comparable dates, current financial results and analysis of the companies’ businesses.

What an investor should verify before relying on the figures
- Price and timestamp: Check an authoritative exchange quote for the relevant trading session; ₹2,900.30 is the article’s 1:29 p.m. IST observation on October 13, 2026, not a current price beyond that time.
- P/E method: Establish whether the multiple uses trailing or forecast earnings and whether earnings are consolidated or otherwise defined. That basis is not supplied with the 17.09 figure.
- Company results: Use the latest company filings and results available for the date you are evaluating. FY26 annual figures describe a completed fiscal year, not subsequent performance.
- Business mix: Consider the varied operating segments and how their performance contributes to consolidated earnings.
- Comparison basis: When comparing peers, align the date, earnings basis, business exposure, market capitalization and growth/profitability measures.
A dated price and an incompletely specified P/E can orient a reader, but they are not enough by themselves to make an investment decision.
