Buy a raw, or ungraded, card if you want to handle it, can evaluate the seller’s evidence, or would rather not pay for grading. Either way, compare recent sold prices for the same card and do not treat a grade as a guaranteed return.
Graded vs. ungraded sports cards: what changes for the buyer?
Authentication and grading are related but different. Authentication asks whether a card is genuine; grading assesses its condition. PSA says it authenticates a card before grading it (PSA grading standards).

A graded card is typically identified by a label and enclosed in a hard-plastic holder. PSA describes its holder as tamper-evident and designed to protect against pressure and most damage (PSA holder information). The holder and label make a card easier to identify and handle consistently, but they do not establish that the seller’s asking price is fair.
A raw card has no third-party grade or grading-company holder. You can inspect and handle it directly, but you must weigh the seller’s photos and description, along with any authenticity safeguards that apply to the listing.

Which should you buy?
| Your priority | Lean toward | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A third-party condition label and encapsulation | Graded | Grading company, grade, certification details, case condition, and sold prices for that exact grade. |
| A lower all-in price or the ability to handle the card | Raw | Clear listing photos, seller evidence, condition details, and any applicable authenticity safeguards. A seller’s description is not a promised numeric grade. |
| You already own the card and are deciding whether to submit it | Compare before submitting | Estimate its likely grade conservatively, then compare raw and relevant graded sold prices while accounting for grading, shipping, insurance, and time. |
These are decision factors, not market laws. There is no universal premium that applies to every graded card, and a raw card is not assured of any particular grade.
How to inspect a graded card
- Review front and back images, the grade label, and the certification information. Where available, use the grading company’s certification lookup; PSA provides certification tools through its certification verification page.
- Look closely at the slab for cracks, damage, or signs of tampering. A tamper-evident holder is a safeguard, not a reason to skip inspection.
- Check whether the listing has an authenticity-program badge. Read the current program terms and confirm the specific listing qualifies; a badge or program should not be assumed from the card alone.
How to inspect a raw card
Ask for clear photographs of both sides under useful lighting. Examine the corners, edges, surface, and centering, as well as folds, stains, creases, and other damage. A seller’s photos can help you judge visible condition, but they cannot guarantee what grade a card would receive.

PSA describes grading as involving both objective checks and some judgment about eye appeal; its standards state that “the other component of grading is somewhat subjective” (PSA grading standards). That is another reason not to translate a raw listing’s condition description into a certain future grade.

Search completed or sold listings for the precise card, matching its year, manufacturer, set, player, card number, and parallel. For graded examples, also match the grading company and grade where possible. A broadly similar player or set is not a reliable substitute for the exact card.

PSA recommends looking at sales from the preceding three to six months in the estimated grade when considering declared value (PSA grading services). That is a useful research window, not a promise of future resale value. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive; completed sales provide evidence of what buyers recently paid.
What grading costs and how long it may take
As displayed by PSA on October 4, 2026, its Standard service listed a fee of $59.99 per card, a $1,000 maximum insured value, and an estimated turnaround of 90–100 business days. These are PSA-specific service-page figures, not industry-wide rates. PSA says turnaround estimates are not guaranteed, begin when an order enters its system, and can change with volume and capacity. Other service levels have different fees, insured-value limits, and estimated times; check the current PSA service page before deciding.

- Guaranteed Autograph or Relic: Each pack contains 1 PSA card and 1 autographed or relic card.
- Mystery Pack: The contents are a surprise, adding excitement to the unboxing experience.
- Baseball Card Collectibles: Featuring cards from the popular High Cheese baseball card brand.
- 2 Card Pack: Each pack contains 2 cards, providing value for collectors.
If you are considering grading a card you already own, compare the likely net outcome—not just the raw and graded sale prices. Include the grading fee and the shipping and insurance costs that apply to your order, as well as the time your card will be unavailable. PSA advises using sold listings for the card in its estimated grade; do not assume the card will receive that grade or that any difference in sale price will cover your costs.

When eBay authentication may help
Some eligible eBay listings include authentication safeguards, but eligibility depends on the listing and buyer or shipping conditions. eBay’s described PSA grading option is limited by buyer and listing requirements, including US buyer and shipping constraints for that service (eBay help on its PSA grading option).

Separately, eBay says eligible single cards priced at $200 or more may qualify for its Authenticity Guarantee, subject to geography and listing conditions. Its process describes authentication for raw cards and inspection of the case and label for graded cards; it does not regrade an already graded card (eBay Authenticity Guarantee for trading cards). Check the actual listing and current program terms rather than assuming a card qualifies based only on price or appearance.
Protecting a raw card you plan to submit
If you keep or prepare a raw card for grading, PSA recommends a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder before submission (PSA grading services). These supplies help hold and protect a card; they do not improve its condition, raise its grade, or guarantee an outcome.
What published grading statistics can—and cannot—tell you
PSA’s guide reports approximate shares of Ultra-Modern sports cards (2017–present) and Modern sports cards (1986–2016) that graded PSA 8 or higher: 90% and 80%, respectively. PSA labels the figures approximate and says each card is graded individually (PSA collector guide). Those vendor-reported group figures are not an independent estimate of the chance that a particular card will earn PSA 8 or better.
The same PSA guide says its recent data shows PSA-graded cards outsell the competition in 9 out of 10 sales. The cited passage does not provide the underlying study date or methodology, so treat this as a PSA-reported claim, not a market-wide conclusion or a prediction about any one card (PSA collector guide).
