Celebrity Net Worth currently estimates Gordon Merchant’s net worth at $570 million. That is the site’s estimate—not a verified or audited figure. Its page does not state a valuation date, explain its calculation, or provide a breakdown of Merchant’s assets and liabilities. Historical estimates vary widely, so no single published figure establishes his current wealth.
Published estimates of Gordon Merchant’s wealth
The figures below come from different years and publications. They are not directly comparable, and they should not be averaged into a new estimate.
| Publisher or ranking | Reported figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Celebrity Net Worth | $570 million | The site’s currently displayed estimate. It provides no valuation date, calculation, or asset-and-liability breakdown. |
| Forbes | $465 million | A figure on Forbes’ 2006 Australia and New Zealand rich-list page. |
| SmartCompany, reporting the BRW Rich 200 | $874 million | A 2010 ranking valuation reported by SmartCompany. |
| InvestSMART | From $630 million to less than $40 million | A 2012 report described Merchant’s wealth as having fallen from $630 million five years earlier to below $40 million, amid Billabong’s falling share price and business difficulties. |
These are dated estimates from different publications and contexts, not a continuous series of audited personal net-worth measurements. In particular, Celebrity Net Worth does not explain how its displayed $570 million estimate relates to the older figures.
Why Billabong matters to the estimates
Merchant’s wealth history is closely tied to Billabong, the surfwear business he founded. Billabong’s 2011–12 financial report says he founded the business in 1973 and had been a major stakeholder since its inception. At the report date, it recorded him as holding 69,705,463 ordinary shares. That is a historical share count, not evidence of his current holding or total wealth. Billabong International Limited’s 2011–12 financial report also describes his experience in surfwear promotion, advertising, sponsorship, and design, and notes his appointment as a non-executive director in 2000.
Share-based wealth can change as a company’s value changes. Forbes’ January 2013 report, discussing events in 2012, put Merchant’s Billabong stake at 14.7% and described the retailer’s losses and unsuccessful acquisition approaches. It said Merchant rejected an offer at A$3.30 per share before later becoming involved in a lower offer process; those bids did not proceed. That report helps explain why wealth estimates tied to Billabong could shift, but it does not value Merchant’s holdings today. Forbes’ account is a dated report about the company and transaction process, not a current personal balance sheet.

Historical reporting also connected Merchant’s wealth to Plantic Technologies. SmartCompany’s 2010 article discussed his investment in the company and a proposed buyout, alongside the BRW Rich 200 valuation. A 2024 BeachGrit article later discussed a Plantic sale and an Australian Taxation Office dispute. Because that account is secondary reporting, it should not be treated here as a definitive statement of legal findings or liability. BeachGrit’s 2024 report is not an independently verified current valuation of Merchant’s assets.
The public material cited here does not establish Merchant’s current total assets, liabilities, private investments, or independently verified net worth. Celebrity Net Worth’s page describes its figures as estimates drawing on public sources and sometimes private tips, but it gives no Merchant-specific calculation or valuation date. There is also no current statement from Merchant in these sources confirming the $570 million estimate.
