On March 17, 2025, Google announced UK data residency for its enterprise AI platform, then called Agentspace, alongside up to £280,000 in Google Cloud credits for startups in a new UK accelerator, expanded AI-skills training and the availability of its Chirp 3 audio-generation model through Vertex AI. Agentspace is now documented as Gemini Enterprise. Google’s July 2026 documentation lists UK support in the europe-west2 region, with data residency at rest and in-region machine-learning processing—but access is subject to an allowlist and limitations apply.
What Google announced in March 2025
The London announcement bundled several initiatives aimed at making Google Cloud more attractive to UK businesses. They were related parts of a market and ecosystem push, not features of one product. Contemporaneous coverage of Google’s March 17, 2025 announcement described the package.
UK data residency for Agentspace
Google said its enterprise AI platform, Agentspace, would be brought into its UK data-residency region. The move addressed a practical objection from organizations wary of sending sensitive company information to AI services whose storage or processing locations did not meet their requirements.
Cloud credits for startups
Google said eligible startups joining a new UK accelerator could receive up to £280,000 in Google Cloud credits. Credits can offset eligible cloud bills under program terms; they are not cash, equity investment, guaranteed technical support or proof of commercial traction. Startups should confirm current eligibility, the amount offered and any restrictions directly with Google’s Cloud startup program.

AI-skills development
The skills initiative was workforce and ecosystem development, intended to help build AI capability among people and organizations. It was not a new enterprise AI product.
Chirp 3 on Vertex AI
Google also announced that Chirp 3, an audio-generation model developed by Google DeepMind, was available through Vertex AI. This was a separate product announcement, not a feature of Agentspace or a UK-only model. Vertex AI is Google Cloud’s developer platform for building and deploying AI applications.
What Agentspace did—and what the name means now
Agentspace launched in beta in December 2024 as Google Cloud’s enterprise AI workspace and agent platform. Its capabilities included searching connected enterprise information, interacting with company data using generative AI, and using assistants and agents. It also included multimodal search and NotebookLM Enterprise-related functionality. The platform was intended to bring information from business systems into a searchable, AI-assisted experience; it did not make agents autonomous by default. Their actions depend on the tools, permissions, connectors and controls an organization configures.

Google’s release notes record that the Google Agentspace experience and default application were renamed Gemini Enterprise on October 9, 2025. Readers may still see “Agentspace” when referring to the 2025 announcement, but Google’s current product documentation uses “Gemini Enterprise.” Google’s Gemini Enterprise release notes also document its later UK-region status.

What UK data residency does—and does not—establish
Data residency concerns where data is stored. Google’s current UK-region documentation goes further, describing both data residency at rest and machine-learning processing in region. Those are meaningful controls for organizations whose policies or procurement requirements call for UK-based storage and processing.
They are not the same as a blanket guarantee that every operational detail remains in the UK. The documented wording does not establish that all metadata, support interactions, administrative access, backups, third-party connector activity or every feature is confined to the country. Nor does a UK deployment automatically establish compliance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, sector rules or an organization’s own security standard. Compliance depends on the service configuration, contracts, access controls and use case.
- Residency at rest: where stored data resides.
- In-region processing: where machine-learning processing occurs, as described for the UK region.
- Data boundary or sovereign controls: a wider set of operational, contractual and access commitments; these should not be inferred from residency wording alone.
- Regional product availability: whether specific models, connectors and features work in the region. Google says limitations apply.
Google’s Assured Workloads documentation separately describes UK data-boundary capabilities and supported products. That is a distinct set of controls, not evidence that every Gemini Enterprise feature has identical coverage. Google Cloud Assured Workloads release notes should be reviewed for the applicable products and commitments.

What “GA with allowlist” means for UK buyers
Generally available is a stronger status than beta or private preview, but “with allowlist” means the UK region is not necessarily available for immediate self-service by every customer. Google’s documentation instructs customers to contact their Google account team for access and notes that limitations apply. Organizations working to a procurement or launch deadline should establish access and feature availability before making a deployment plan.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the move mattered to Google and UK organizations
For UK public-sector bodies and businesses in areas such as finance, healthcare and law, data-location requirements can be part of internal risk policy, contracts or regulatory expectations. Local processing and storage can make an AI service easier to evaluate and procure, particularly when prompts or retrieved documents contain sensitive business information. Residency is a risk-control feature, not a substitute for assessing the service’s full security and compliance posture.

The announcement also fit Google’s broader effort to build a UK enterprise-AI ecosystem. Regional controls could make Google Cloud more appealing to organizations cautious about cloud AI; credits and skills programs could attract startups and developers. The strategy addressed competition from Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic and UK or European providers. It was a competitive positioning move, not evidence that Google had become the UK’s market leader.
BT and WPP featured as customer and partner examples. BT discussed operational AI applications, including customer service and phone-scam detection; WPP was working with Google on AI and data initiatives. These examples show commercial interest, but the announcement coverage did not provide independently verified Agentspace productivity, accuracy, savings or job-impact figures. They should not be treated as benchmarks for a typical deployment.

Connected systems matter: a search or agent workflow may touch Google Drive, Microsoft SharePoint, Jira, ServiceNow or custom sources, each with its own storage, access and processing arrangements. Map the full information path, not just the region selected for the AI service. Review identity and permissions, audit logging, prompt and output monitoring, data-loss protections, retention and deletion rules, and human approval for consequential actions. Include safeguards against data leakage and prompt injection.
When Gemini Enterprise may fit—and when to compare alternatives
Gemini Enterprise may be attractive if an organization already uses Google Cloud, Vertex AI, Workspace or BigQuery and wants enterprise search, assistants or workflow-oriented agents with UK-region processing. It may be a weaker fit if a required connector or model is unavailable in the UK region, if the organization needs fully isolated infrastructure, or if it lacks the capacity to administer Google Cloud. Google’s Gemini Enterprise product page describes the current service; a definitive public UK-region price was not established in the available coverage, so buyers should request pricing for their plan and usage.
| Option | Often a fit for | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Organizations standardized on Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint and Entra ID | Native Microsoft productivity and identity integration |
| Azure AI Foundry | Developers building custom AI applications in Azure | Developer and model-platform orientation rather than a direct equivalent to the full Gemini Enterprise workplace experience |
| Amazon Bedrock | AWS-heavy organizations seeking access to multiple model providers | AWS-native model and application platform |
| Anthropic Claude for enterprise use | Organizations prioritizing Claude’s assistant experience or existing Anthropic relationships | A different model and enterprise-assistant ecosystem |
| Self-hosted or sovereign-cloud deployment | Organizations requiring direct infrastructure control or particular jurisdictional guarantees | Potentially greater control, with more engineering, operating cost and responsibility |
The trade-off is not simply which model is best. Compare regional feature coverage, connector effort, identity integration, governance, commercial terms and the degree of infrastructure control your organization needs. A managed platform can reduce operational work while increasing dependence on a vendor’s controls, contracts and roadmap; self-hosting shifts more of that responsibility to the customer.
