Google’s Taiwan Investment: What the Reported $66 Million Figure Gets Wrong

The reported US$66 million figure for a Google data-center investment in Taiwan is not verified by the available sources. The clearest current figure is different: Taiwan approved two Google investment applications totaling about NT$27 billion (reported as US$857 million) in April 2026, but the government did not disclose their detailed uses. That approval should not be described as funding a new data center.

What is Google investing in Taiwan?

Google has several distinct activities in Taiwan, and their figures describe different things. The company says its Changhua County data center opened in 2013 and that it has invested more than US$1.6 billion in that facility since 2011. Google describes that as cumulative spending on construction, expansion, outfitting, and ongoing upgrades—not a new 2026 commitment. Google’s Changhua data center page also says the facility contributed roughly US$4.9 billion annually to Taiwan’s GDP from 2017 through 2022; that is Google’s modeled estimate, not a government-verified measure.

Separately, Google opened an AI infrastructure hardware engineering hub in Taipei in November 2025. Google called it its largest such hub outside the United States and said it housed hundreds of employees. The hub is part of the company’s Taiwan presence, but it is not evidence that the reported US$66 million is earmarked for a data center. Google’s announcement describes the hub’s role.

What does the NT$27 billion approval cover?

On April 22, 2026, Focus Taiwan reported that Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs approved two Google investment applications totaling about NT$27 billion, converted in the report to US$857 million. The reported breakdown was NT$25.34 billion through Fructan Holdings Singapore Pte. for data processing and electronics information services, and NT$1.74 billion through Connectds Singapore Pte. for semiconductor-related purchases. Focus Taiwan’s report says the ministry did not reveal the detailed uses of the funds.

The approval categories do not establish that the money will build a new data center, expand Changhua, or fund a Tainan site. Focus Taiwan noted media reports linking funds to existing cloud-related business and Changhua, and reported that Google was planning another data center in Tainan; those are not ministry-confirmed allocations. Taiwan’s Invest Taiwan agency had also reported a Google plan to build a Tainan data center in 2019, which is historical context rather than confirmation of a current project or its funding. Invest Taiwan’s 2019 item records that earlier plan.

How should the investment figures be compared?

Figure What it describes What it does not establish
More than US$1.6 billion since 2011 Google-reported cumulative investment in its Changhua data center, including construction, expansion, outfitting, and upgrades. A new commitment made in 2026 or the budget for a separate project.
About NT$27 billion (reported as US$857 million) approved in April 2026 Two investment applications approved by Taiwan’s MOEA, with categories covering data processing and electronics information services, and semiconductor-related purchases. A confirmed allocation to a new data center or any specific site; the ministry did not disclose detailed uses.
US$66 million The amount in the assigned headline. The available sources do not substantiate it as a Google Taiwan data-center investment or identify its project, date, or origin.

Is Google building a new data center in Taiwan?

The available information does not confirm that the 2026 approvals will fund a new data center. The Tainan plan reported by Invest Taiwan in 2019 is evidence of an earlier announced plan, not proof of a current construction schedule. Nor should the reported NT$27 billion approval be treated as confirmation of a particular site: the MOEA did not publish detailed fund allocations.

Power is another relevant part of the infrastructure picture, but it is separate from the investment approvals. Google said in April 2025 that it had signed its first Taiwan offshore wind power purchase agreement with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Google expected the project to begin operating in 2027 and said it would provide power for its Taiwan data centers and offices; that was a stated expectation, not an accomplished result. Google’s announcement gives the company’s stated schedule.

What else has Google said about expanding in Taiwan?

In remarks reported by Focus Taiwan on September 2, 2026, Google executive Amin Vahdat said the company would increase its Taiwan office space by 60 percent. He did not give an investment figure, hiring target, or timetable. He also described collaboration with Taiwanese partners on AI hardware co-design, saying: “We couldn’t be building the infrastructure, the compute platform that we do today, without this deep co-design.” The space increase is an office-expansion statement, not a data-center budget. Focus Taiwan’s report covers the comments.
