Bluesky announced a $15 million Series A on October 24, 2024, led by Blockchain Capital. The company said it would start developing an optional subscription tier with possible features such as higher-quality video uploads and profile customization—but it did not announce a finished product or launch date. Bluesky also said the service would remain free to use and that subscribing would not boost an account’s ranking.
How much did Bluesky raise, and who led the round?
Bluesky announced $15 million in Series A financing on October 24, 2024. Blockchain Capital led the round. Bluesky named Alumni Ventures, True Ventures, SevenX, Amir Shevat of Darkmode, Kubernetes co-creator Joe Beda, and others as participants. The company said the funding would support community growth, Trust and Safety, and the AT Protocol developer ecosystem. Bluesky’s announcement said it had more than 13 million users at the time; that is a company-reported October 2024 figure, not a current count.
What subscription features did Bluesky describe?
In its October 2024 announcement, Bluesky said it would begin developing an optional paid tier. Its examples included higher-quality video uploads and profile customizations such as colors and avatar frames. The company described these as possibilities, not a confirmed feature list or a launch package.
In a November 2024 interview, COO Rose Wang also discussed custom aesthetics, additional video uploads, and higher-resolution images as possible paid benefits. She said core speech would not be put behind a paywall. That interview described the company’s plans at the time; it does not establish that these benefits were released.

What did the Bluesky+ mockup show—and what did it not establish?
A December 2024 interface mockup reported by TechCrunch depicted possible Bluesky+ features including custom app icons, profile badges, inline translations, post analytics, and bookmark folders. It showed sample pricing of $8 per month or $72 per year.
Those figures and features were illustrative, not final subscription terms. TechCrunch described the mockup as non-final, and Bluesky engineer Dan Abramov cautioned that the feature list did not necessarily represent what would be released. The mockup therefore cannot be used as evidence of current pricing or availability.

Would paid Bluesky accounts get more visibility?
Bluesky said it would not uprank accounts simply because they subscribed to a paid tier. It also stated that the app would remain free to use, saying: “we believe that information and conversation should be easily accessible, not locked down.” These were company principles stated in October 2024, not confirmation of the behavior or terms of a later subscription product.
How did the funding announcement fit Bluesky’s broader monetization plans?
The company also said it wanted to enable voluntary payments for creators and projects. It suggested independent applications built on the AT Protocol might use subscriptions, domain-name registrations, or creator payments. These were plans and possibilities, not finalized terms for Bluesky or those independent apps.

What is Bluesky’s current reported size?
Bluesky’s official FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026. The FAQ is the source for that dated company figure.

A January 2026 transparency report said the network grew from 25.94 million to 41.41 million users during 2025. Its scope includes accounts hosted on Bluesky’s infrastructure and accounts across thousands of independently operated Personal Data Servers in the federated AT Protocol network. These are distinct dated counts with the report’s broader stated scope, not a replacement for the FAQ’s May 2026 figure. Bluesky’s transparency report provides the underlying figures.

The October 2024 announcement and December 2024 mockup do not establish whether Bluesky launched a consumer subscription, or what its current features and price are, as of October 8, 2026. The $8 monthly and $72 annual amounts appeared as sample pricing in the non-final mockup only; they should not be treated as current subscription prices.
