On January 22, 2025, the Financial Times reported that Google was making a fresh investment of more than $1 billion in Anthropic. The report, which cited four people familiar with the situation, described it as additional to Google’s previously committed roughly $2 billion. The sources reviewed do not establish that Google or Anthropic publicly confirmed the transaction or its final terms.

What was reported—and what was confirmed?

The headline refers to a report, not a public deal announcement. Reuters summarized the Financial Times report on January 22, 2025, saying Anthropic declined to comment and Google did not immediately respond. Accordingly, the supported wording is that Google was reported to be making an investment of more than $1 billion; the available reporting does not establish the final amount, closing status, or terms. How does the reported investment fit with Google’s earlier commitment?

The same contemporaneous report said Google had already committed about $2 billion to Anthropic. That figure describes the prior commitment cited in the January 2025 coverage; it should not be treated as a verified total paid, a current ownership value, or a complete accounting of every later financial relationship.

Was this part of the Lightspeed funding round?

No. The Financial Times coverage described Google’s reported investment as separate from a prospective Anthropic funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Contemporary coverage connected that anticipated round to a valuation of around $60 billion, but that was an expected valuation in the context of a separate financing—not a confirmed valuation for Google’s investment or proof that the round closed on those terms. How should the financing be distinguished from cloud and compute deals?

An investment and an infrastructure arrangement are different kinds of business relationship. An investment supplies capital in exchange for a financial interest or under other financing terms; cloud and compute arrangements concern access to computing services or hardware. The Federal Trade Commission has described the broader pattern of cloud providers investing in AI developers while those developers may also commit to substantial cloud spending. That context helps explain why the relationships can overlap, but it does not verify the terms or finalization of this particular investment. FTC report on cloud provider and AI developer partnerships.

Anthropic later described training Claude on AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs, and announced a Google and Broadcom compute partnership. The company also described Amazon as its primary cloud provider and training partner. Those are infrastructure facts, not confirmation of the January 2025 investment’s terms. What later funding news does—and does not—tell us

Anthropic announced a $30 billion Series G round at a $380 billion post-money valuation on February 12, 2026. Those later company-reported figures describe that round; they do not verify the amount, closing, or terms of Google’s reported January 2025 investment. Anthropic’s Series G announcement.

A September 2025 Rothschild & Co investor update contains conflicting dates for a $1 billion Google investment: its prose refers to June 2025, while its table labels the investment January 2025. That internal inconsistency is not reliable evidence of a second June transaction. The January date is the one supported by the contemporaneous reports of the headline event.
