Google and Microsoft each donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s 2025 inaugural fund, according to January 9, 2025 reporting that cited company confirmations. Google separately said it would provide a YouTube livestream and a link on its homepage. The gifts went to an inaugural committee, not Trump’s campaign; the public record cited here does not establish that either company received favorable treatment in return.

What Google and Microsoft contributed

The Guardian reported on January 9, 2025, that Google and Microsoft had each given $1 million to the Trump Vance 2025 Inaugural Committee. Google’s global head of government affairs and public policy, Karan Bhatia, confirmed the company’s support in a named statement. Microsoft’s contribution was confirmed by a company spokesperson in a statement to Bloomberg, as reported by the Guardian. These are separate company gifts, not a joint donation. The Guardian’s report describes both confirmations.

Bhatia said Google was “pleased to support the 2025 inauguration” with a YouTube livestream, a direct link on Google’s homepage, and a donation to the committee. Those promotional and broadcast plans were Google’s, not Microsoft’s. The cited reports do not provide a comparable named Microsoft executive explanation for the company’s decision.

How the inaugural fund grew

The Guardian put the committee’s fundraising at $170 million on January 9, 2025, an early snapshot. A later congressional oversight document gave the retrospective total as $239 million. The same document said Trump’s 2017 inaugural committee raised $107 million, previously the record. The different 2025 figures reflect different reporting dates, not competing final totals. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s oversight material provides the later figures.

The Brennan Center for Justice reported that the 2025 inauguration had more donors giving at least $1 million than any previous inaugural fund, and that its ten largest funders accounted for more than one dollar in every ten raised. That finding does not establish that Google or Microsoft was among the ten largest donors. The Brennan Center’s analysis discusses the donor concentration and the rules governing inaugural committees.

Why inaugural gifts raise different questions from campaign donations

An inaugural committee is not a campaign committee. The Brennan Center describes inaugural committees as facing no federal contribution limits and few federal restrictions. The Associated Press reports that committees must disclose who contributed but are not required to disclose how the money was spent. Those rules help explain why large gifts attract scrutiny; they do not, by themselves, show that a donation was unlawful. The Associated Press’s January 2025 report explains the disclosure distinction.

A later House oversight document says committee filings were amended to resolve initial contribution-report discrepancies involving General Motors, USAA, Amazon, and Microsoft. That is a reason to distinguish the contemporaneous company confirmations from a claim about the exact entry in a final, amended itemized filing. The cited material does not establish a final itemized amount for either company beyond the reported and confirmed $1 million contributions.

How the gifts compare with earlier inaugurations

Company Trump 2017 Biden 2021 Trump 2025
Google $285,000, as reported by the Associated Press $285,000, as reported by the Associated Press $1 million, reported January 9, 2025, with company confirmation reported by the Guardian
Microsoft $500,000, as reported by the Associated Press $500,000, as reported by the Associated Press $1 million, reported January 9, 2025, with company confirmation reported by the Guardian

The historical figures come from the Associated Press’s January 2025 coverage; the Guardian also reported Microsoft’s $500,000 contributions in 2017 and 2021. The 2025 reported amount was higher for each company. The figures do not explain why either company increased its contribution. Associated Press coverage provides the earlier comparisons.

What lawmakers said—and what the evidence does not show

On January 17, 2025, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bennet wrote to the CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Uber asking them to explain million-dollar gifts to the inaugural fund. The senators said the donations “raise questions about corruption and the influence of corporate money on the Trump administration.” That statement records lawmakers’ concerns; it is not a finding that corruption occurred or that a company bought access or favorable policy. The senators’ January 17 statement describes their inquiry.

The Brennan Center notes that the motive behind any individual inaugural donation is unclear. Google publicly described how it would support the inauguration, but neither that explanation nor Microsoft’s reported confirmation establishes a specific reason for the size of either company’s gift. The available material does not establish a quid pro quo.
