Yes—but not to every Google employee in the United States. On January 30, 2025, Google confirmed a voluntary exit program for eligible U.S.-based employees in its Platforms & Devices organization. The group includes Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Pixel, Fitbit, Nest, Google Photos and Google One. The offer included severance, but Google did not initially disclose the package’s precise terms.
What Google announced
Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president responsible for Platforms & Devices, told employees they could voluntarily leave the company under a severance package. Google confirmed the program in a statement quoted by MediaPost and reported by 9to5Google.

The announcement was made on January 30, 2025. It was a targeted workforce program—not a company-wide buyout and not a general offer to all U.S.-based Google workers.
Who was covered?
The reported eligibility scope was U.S.-based employees working in Google’s Platforms & Devices organization. Coverage identified work involving:

These products describe the organization’s scope; they do not prove that every employee who worked on a listed product automatically qualified. The public reports did not detail the internal rules based on reporting line, job level, employment category or specific assignment.
The initial program was not reported as covering Search, Google AI, every Alphabet employee, every U.S. Google employee or employees outside the United States. In other words, “all” applied to the relevant eligible population within the U.S. Platforms & Devices group—not to Google’s entire workforce.
What employees were offered
Employees who accepted could leave with a severance package. However, the initial public reporting did not establish:

- How many weeks of pay the package provided
- Whether the amount varied by tenure or job level
- How unvested stock, bonuses or vacation were handled
- Whether health coverage or immigration support was included
- The enrollment deadline or acceptance process
- Whether the terms matched those offered in an involuntary layoff
Google’s January 2023 layoff package should not be treated as the formula for this 2025 program. In 2023, Google announced a separate global reduction affecting about 12,000 employees and described U.S. terms including at least 60 days of notification, severance beginning at 16 weeks’ salary, accelerated vesting and other benefits. Those terms belonged to that layoff announcement, not necessarily to the Platforms & Devices voluntary-exit offer. (Google’s January 2023 announcement.)
Why did Google make the offer?
The program followed the consolidation of major Android and hardware-related operations into Platforms & Devices. Google said it wanted employees to be strongly committed to the combined organization’s mission and focused on building products with greater speed and efficiency.
The offer also fit a broader technology-industry pattern of cost control, organizational consolidation and workforce reshaping. A voluntary program can reduce headcount or change the mix of skills without immediately imposing involuntary layoffs. Reporting described the offer as arriving amid expectations of further cuts, but the program itself did not prove that layoffs would follow.

- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
It is therefore too strong to say that Google announced the offer because it was abandoning hardware or preparing to terminate everyone who declined. Neither conclusion was established by the public information available at the time.

Reports citing internal documents described Platforms & Devices as having more than 25,000 full-time employees globally. That figure was the reported size of the organization—not the number of U.S. employees who received an offer and not the number who accepted one.
Google did not publicly disclose the U.S. eligible headcount or the number of employees who ultimately took the package.
Was this a layoff?
No. A voluntary exit program gives eligible employees an option to leave under company-sponsored terms. An involuntary layoff is an employer-directed separation.
The distinction matters, particularly for employees assessing job security and household finances. The existence of a buyout may signal restructuring or an effort to reduce staffing, but it does not establish that employees who refuse it will be laid off. Any claim that the offer guaranteed future layoffs would require separate evidence.

The reports did not announce a product cancellation or roadmap change. The program did not establish that Google was abandoning Pixel, discontinuing Android, exiting hardware, spinning off Chrome or shutting down Fitbit or Nest.
Platforms & Devices was broader than a physical-hardware division: it included major software and services such as Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Photos and Google One. The staffing move was best understood as organizational restructuring, not evidence that any one of those products was ending.

How the offer fit Google’s broader workforce actions
| Date | Action |
|---|---|
| January 2023 | Google announced layoffs affecting approximately 12,000 employees globally and published U.S. severance details. |
| January 2024 | Reports described cuts affecting parts of hardware, central engineering and Google Assistant-related work. |
| January 30, 2025 | Platforms & Devices offered voluntary exits to eligible U.S.-based employees. |
| February 2025 | Google offered a similar voluntary-exit option to U.S. People Operations employees, according to 9to5Google. |
| June 2025 | Later reports described similar offers for additional groups, including Search, Ads, marketing, communications and other teams. |
The later programs should not automatically be treated as extensions of the January Platforms & Devices offer. Their eligibility rules and terms may have differed. Later reporting on broader offers is available from SVConline and Search Engine Land.
What employees would need to check
Public reports did not answer several practical questions that would normally be resolved in an employee’s individual offer documents:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The exact severance calculation and payment schedule
- Whether eligibility depended on payroll location, reporting line, job family or product assignment
- Whether contractors or employees on visas were included
- How unvested stock and bonuses would be treated
- Whether health insurance and immigration assistance continued
- Whether accepting affected rehire eligibility
- The application or acceptance deadline
- Whether Google could reject an application
- Whether employees had to work through a notice period
Those details could materially affect the financial value of the offer. Employees should rely on the internal agreement and human-resources guidance for those questions rather than assume that Google’s 2023 layoff terms applied.
