Google Domains’ 20% Off Deal: What Happened and Why It’s Expired

Google Domains left beta in March 2022 with a 20% promotion that expired the following month. The service later moved toward a Squarespace transition; here’s what the old offer covered and how to assess alternatives.

Google Domains did leave beta, and Google did offer 20% off one domain registration or transfer-in with the code DOMAINS20. That was a launch promotion announced on March 15, 2022, and it expired on April 15, 2022. Google later agreed to sell Google Domains’ assets to Squarespace, so this is not a current Google registrar offer.

What Google announced in March 2022

Google said Google Domains, which had launched in beta in 2015, was moving into general availability on March 15, 2022, in 26 countries. The announcement marked a wider release; it did not include a detailed technical changelog or mean that every domain ending was available in every country. Google said the service already had millions of active registrations.

Google described the product as a way to register and manage a domain for a business, side project, or personal site. It advertised more than 300 domain endings at the time. “Out of beta” meant general availability, not free domains, included web hosting, or a complete website-building service.

How the original 20% promotion worked

Offer detail What Google announced
Discount 20% off one eligible domain registration or transfer-in
Eligible customers New and returning users
Official code DOMAINS20
Offer period March 15 through April 15, 2022
Status now Expired; it cannot be treated as a current discount

Google’s original announcement gives the code as DOMAINS20. Some contemporary secondary reports printed DOMAIN20, but that is not the code shown in Google’s announcement. The promotion applied to a domain transaction, not automatically to hosting, email, website-builder subscriptions, or premium-domain pricing.

What Google Domains offered at the time

The following are features Google advertised in its March 2022 launch announcement, not a guarantee about any successor platform or today’s registrar services.

Capability What it meant
Registration and management Registering a domain and managing its settings.
DNS Connecting a domain to websites and other online services. Google described its DNS infrastructure as high-performance.
DNSSEC Google advertised one-click DNSSEC, an additional way to help protect the authenticity of DNS responses.
Privacy protection Google said privacy protection was included at no additional cost; coverage can depend on the domain ending and applicable rules.
Security and support Google advertised two-step verification and around-the-clock support from real people.
Google and third-party connections Google promoted connections with Business Profile for Search and Maps, Google Workspace, Google Sites, and partners including Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly, and Bluehost.

A domain is not the same as a website or hosting plan

A registrar handles the domain registration relationship. DNS publishes records that direct the domain to services. A host serves a website or application, an email provider handles mailboxes, and a website builder provides tools for creating a site (and may host it). These jobs can be handled by one company or several.

Buying a domain through Google Domains did not by itself provide a complete business website, an online store, or general-purpose hosting. Google Sites and the listed partners were possible destinations or integrations. Google Workspace was a separate email and productivity service, not domain registration or web hosting.

What happened to Google Domains

On June 15, 2023, Squarespace announced an agreement to acquire Google Domains’ assets and said the Google Domains business would wind down after a transition period. Squarespace described the deal as covering approximately 10 million domains. Its announcement also said it would honor existing Google Domains customers’ renewal prices for at least 12 months after closing. That commitment concerned those customers during the stated transition; it did not extend the 2022 promotion or make its code usable on Squarespace.

How to choose a registrar now

There is no single replacement that fits every domain owner. Start by separating the need for a registrar from the need for a website, email, or DNS platform.

  • For domains alongside a hosted site builder: Squarespace or Wix may suit people who want fewer vendors. Compare the full cost of the domain and site-builder subscription, and consider the trade-off of keeping more services with one company.
  • For technical users focused on DNS and infrastructure: Cloudflare Registrar may fit users already relying on Cloudflare services. It is not a no-code website builder, so hosting and email may need to come from elsewhere.
  • For a conventional standalone registrar: Namecheap is one option to compare. Review the renewal price and any add-ons rather than judging by an introductory offer alone.
  • For a broad small-business bundle: GoDaddy offers domains alongside other business services, but compare renewal costs and check which add-ons are optional.
  • For ecommerce: Shopify is designed for online stores; it is generally more than someone needs if the only requirement is a domain or a simple informational site.
  • For Google email and productivity: Google Workspace can provide those services independently of who registers the domain.

These are categories to compare, not endorsements or claims about current prices. Check vendors’ current terms and confirm that your desired domain ending is supported before buying.

Checklist before registering or moving a domain

  • Compare the ongoing cost: Check registration, renewal, and transfer pricing, not just the first-year promotion. A transfer can have its own fee and rules.
  • Check privacy for the exact domain ending: Privacy availability and eligibility vary by top-level domain.
  • Review DNSSEC and account security: Confirm who controls DNSSEC signing and look for strong sign-in and recovery options, such as multifactor authentication or passkeys.
  • Understand transfer and recovery procedures: Check transfer locks, authorization-code requirements, support channels, account recovery, and how to export or transfer the domain.
  • Separate bundled services: Confirm whether email, hosting, analytics, or a site-builder subscription is actually included and what it costs after any introductory period.
  • Protect a live site or mailbox during a change: Record current DNS records, make sure the domain’s administrative email is accessible, and keep existing hosting active until the replacement configuration is confirmed. Changing nameservers without recreating needed records can disrupt a website or email.

Transfer rules, privacy, and DNSSEC support can differ by domain ending and provider. A registrar change does not automatically move the website, mailboxes, or hosting; those services require their own migration plan.
