On March 1, 2011, PCWorld reported that Google planned to let Google Apps users buy additional storage through a feature called User Managed Storage. It was a historical offer for Docs and certain other services—not a new 2026 feature, and not a way to add Gmail storage.
What Google Apps User Managed Storage offered
Under the 2011 plan, an administrator first had to enable the option for the domain and allow Google Checkout. After that, each user could buy additional capacity for their own account. PCWorld reported five purchase options, ranging from 20 GB for $5 per year to 1 TB for $256 per year. Those figures describe the offer as reported in 2011; they are not current Google prices.
The purchased space could be used for Google Docs files and, where Blogger and Picasa were included in the Apps domain, content in those services. PCWorld said the then-standard Apps editions provided 1 GB per user for Docs storage and 1 GB for Picasa and Blogger; the paid Business edition included 25 GB for Gmail. These are historical quotas reported in 2011, not current plan specifications.

Why Gmail was excluded
User Managed Storage did not increase a user’s Gmail quota. The report treated Gmail as a separate part of the Apps offering, so buying this extra capacity addressed Docs and eligible Picasa or Blogger content—not an inbox that was running out of space. Anyone comparing storage options should first identify which service is full.
How more storage works for Google Workspace now
Google’s current organizational option is Workspace Additional Storage, a paid add-on that increases eligible organizations’ pooled storage. It is not the 2011 per-user purchase flow: a super administrator buys the add-on for the organization, and availability depends on the Workspace edition and user licenses. Google says an organization can buy multiple subscriptions.

Google’s help page lists the following subscription sizes and prices. The listed USD prices are for an Annual/Fixed-Term Plan with monthly billing; availability and pricing can change, so confirm them on Google’s current page before making a decision.
| Workspace edition or group | Listed storage subscription | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Business and Enterprise editions | 100 GB | $15 USD per month |
| Business and Enterprise editions | 1 TB | $40 USD per month |
| Business and Enterprise editions | 10 TB | $300 USD per month |
| Workspace for Nonprofits, and Essentials or Enterprise Essentials | 10 TB | $300 USD per month |
| Education editions | 10 TB | Price through a reseller or Google for Education sales representative |
These are organizational subscription tiers, not storage allotments or prices guaranteed for every individual user. Google’s Additional Storage guidance has the current eligibility details. Google says extra capacity is usually added within five minutes, though it can take up to four hours.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Easily move files off your device, freeing up valuable space so you can store your favorite photos, movies, music, games, and more.
- Say goodbye to emailing photos between devices. Once they’re on your SanDisk Phone Drive, read speeds up to 100MB/s let you transfer files fast. (1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support required.)
- AUTOMATIC BACKUP. Automatically back up your latest photos, videos, music, documents, and contacts with the SanDisk Memory Zone app. (Download and installation required. Set up automatic backup within app settings. See official SanDisk website for Memory Zone details.)
- DATA RECOVERY. Recover deleted files with the included RescuePRO Deluxe software.(Registration and download required; terms and conditions apply. See RescuePRO page on SanDisk site.)
- CONVENIENT DESIGN. Attach your drive to your keyring to help keep it secure so you can have storage wherever you are, whenever you need it.
Before an administrator buys
- Check whether the organization’s edition and the relevant users’ licenses support pooled storage.
- Estimate how much additional pooled capacity the organization needs and how many users need access to it.
- Compare the add-on with an edition upgrade or additional user licenses. Google says upgrading may be more cost-effective for some Business editions.
- For users on licenses that do not support pooled storage, Google says the organization may need to upgrade the license or reduce those users’ storage use.
Where licenses support pooled storage, administrators can manage per-user limits through organizational units or configuration groups. The add-on increases organizational pooled capacity; it is not the same as a personal purchase assigned to one account.
Personal Google Accounts use a different storage path
If the account is a personal Google Account rather than an organization-managed Workspace account, Google directs users to Google One for consumer storage plans. Prices and availability vary by location and can change, so use Google’s local Google One plans page rather than relying on a price quoted for another market. Google says Workspace Individual accounts include 1 TB and may add Google One storage; that does not make Google One the general purchasing route for every Workspace user.

Choosing the right route
- Personal Google Account: Check Google One plans for the account’s location.
- Organization-managed Workspace account: Ask the administrator whether the edition and user licenses qualify for Workspace Additional Storage.
- One user needs more room: Have the administrator check license eligibility and per-user limits; the current add-on is organization-level pooled storage, not the old individual checkout model.
- Gmail is the problem: Do not assume a Docs or pooled-storage option applies to Gmail. Identify the account type and the storage rules for the service that is full.
For Workspace, compare the add-on’s cost with the cost of changing editions or licenses before purchasing. Google’s current eligibility and price information is on its administrator storage page; legacy G Suite add-ons ended for new purchases in June 2022, according to Google’s legacy add-on guidance.
