Goldman Sachs Agreed to Invest $325 Million in iSpot. Could It Challenge Nielsen’s TV Measurement Lead?

Goldman Sachs Asset Management agreed to invest $325 million in TV measurement company iSpot in an announcement dated April 27, 2022. iSpot said the investment would help expand its cross-platform ad measurement and verification business. It signaled a push to give advertisers and networks another option—not proof that Nielsen had already lost its leading position.

What Goldman Sachs agreed to invest in

iSpot announced an agreement for funds managed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management to invest $325 million. The company described the resulting stake as a “significant minority stake,” but did not disclose a percentage. The announcement does not establish whether the transaction later closed, what its final terms were, or what Goldman Sachs owns now. iSpot’s April 27, 2022 announcement is the source for the transaction details.

iSpot also said it had raised $58 million since its 2012 founding before this investment. That is a company-reported historical figure, not an independently verified funding total. At the time, the company reported more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue, relationships with more than 400 brands and media networks, and 350 employees. Those figures describe iSpot as presented in 2022; they should not be read as current financial or staffing data.

What iSpot said it would do with the investment

iSpot said the funds would support growth and adoption of real-time cross-platform TV ad verification, audience measurement, and performance metrics. Its stated priorities were:

The company described its platform as measuring brand impact and business outcomes across linear television, time-shifted viewing, video on demand, and streaming. It said its tools included second-by-second ad measurement, dashboards, APIs, and customized analytics. These are descriptions from iSpot’s announcement, not independent assessments of product performance.

How iSpot fits into the TV measurement market

TV ad measurement helps advertisers and networks assess who saw an ad and, in some cases, how exposure relates to business outcomes. The figures can inform campaign planning, evaluation, and transactions between buyers and sellers. Nielsen has long been an established measurement provider; iSpot’s investment gave it resources to pursue a larger role as the industry considered other approaches.

Contemporaneous trade coverage described iSpot as a Nielsen alternative and reported that media companies were piloting or adopting alternatives. That points to a competitive opening and experimentation, not a completed break in Nielsen’s position. A 2023 SEC filing by a competitor also listed iSpot among television measurement competitors, confirming a field with multiple providers but not revealing their relative market shares.

iSpot’s current company overview, accessed October 8, 2026, says it has exclusive access within its data footprint to 83 million TVs and set-top boxes and direct integrations with more than 400 streaming platforms and DSPs. These are iSpot’s own figures, may change, and do not by themselves establish how its reach compares with rivals. See iSpot’s company overview.

What later reporting says about Nielsen’s position

In a January 22, 2025 report, Axios described Nielsen as the most-used currency in TV measurement, while noting that networks were partnering with iSpot and VideoAmp and experimenting with multiple currencies. Axios also reported that Nielsen had received accreditation for its Big Data + Panel national TV measurement product. This is a dated snapshot of the market, not a current market-share audit or proof that every buyer and seller uses the same standard. Read Axios’s January 2025 report.

Axios said Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel product covered 45 million households and more than 75 million devices. Those figures are not directly comparable with iSpot’s stated data footprint: the companies describe different measures, and the available figures do not show comparable market shares.

What would show whether an alternative is gaining ground

Investment, customer announcements, and expanded data access can indicate that a provider is competing for business. They do not alone show that advertisers and networks have replaced an incumbent. A meaningful comparison would need evidence across several dimensions:

  • Coverage: Which screens and platforms are measured, and how representative is the data?
  • Methodology: What data sources and methods produce the audience estimates?
  • Outcomes: Can the service connect ad exposure to business results in a useful, credible way?
  • Speed and detail: How quickly are results available, and at what level of granularity?
  • Validation: Is the measurement independently accredited or otherwise validated?
  • Market acceptance: Do buyers and sellers accept the figures for planning and transactions?

The available sources do not provide like-for-like scores or market shares for Nielsen, iSpot, and VideoAmp. They support describing iSpot as a serious alternative in a changing market, not ranking the providers or declaring that Nielsen’s lead has ended.
