Gold and the U.S. dollar often move in opposite directions, but the relationship is not a rule and cannot reliably predict gold’s next move. A weaker dollar can make dollar-priced gold more affordable to buyers using other currencies; interest rates, risk, investor flows, central-bank decisions, consumer demand and supply can reinforce or overwhelm that effect.
Why does gold often rise when the U.S. dollar falls?
International gold is commonly quoted in U.S. dollars. When the dollar weakens against other currencies, buyers outside the United States may find a given dollar gold price less expensive in their own currency. That can support demand, all else equal. A stronger dollar can make dollar-priced gold more expensive for those buyers and act as a headwind.
This is a translation and affordability channel, not a mechanical price formula. A local-currency gold price reflects both the dollar gold quote and the buyer’s exchange rate. The U.S. Federal Reserve notes that exchange rates are determined in foreign-exchange markets and are one channel through which monetary policy affects the broader economy; neither it nor the Treasury targets a particular exchange-rate level. Federal Reserve FAQ, updated July 11, 2024.
Do gold and the dollar always move in opposite directions?
No. The inverse relationship is a tendency, not a law. There is no single timeless correlation figure that establishes how strongly they move together: the relationship varies with the period, the measures used and the forces driving markets. A dollar move may matter less than changing real yields, risk appetite, investment flows or supply and demand.

For example, a geopolitical shock might support gold as investors seek perceived defensive assets, even if the dollar also strengthens. Conversely, investors may sell gold to raise cash, take profits or rebalance portfolios during a period of stress. Correlation between a gold series and a dollar measure describes how they moved over a selected period; by itself, it does not show that one caused the other.
How interest rates and real yields affect gold
Gold does not pay interest. When interest-bearing assets offer higher returns, the opportunity cost of holding gold can rise. Lower yields, or expectations that rates will fall, can ease that headwind. Markets often reprice expectations before a central bank actually changes its policy rate, so the announcement alone is not a dependable gold-price switch.

The context of a rate move matters. The World Gold Council’s Gold Mid-Year Outlook 2026 says that markets interpret tightening in light of its implications for growth, inflation credibility, financial stability and the U.S. dollar. A rate increase therefore is not automatically bearish for gold, nor is a cut automatically bullish. Real yields—the return on interest-bearing assets after inflation—are useful to watch alongside rate expectations, but neither dictates the price on its own.
Other forces that move gold prices
Gold demand comes from several sources, and their relative importance changes. Private investment can move quickly, while consumer demand, official-sector decisions and supply contribute different pressures over time.

- Risk and uncertainty: Geopolitical shocks, financial stress, trade disputes or policy uncertainty may increase demand for perceived defensive assets. But liquidity needs, profit-taking and portfolio rebalancing can prompt selling even during stressful periods.
- Investor flows and positioning: Fund flows and investor positioning can amplify moves in either direction. Inflows to physical gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can add private investment demand; outflows can remove it.
- Central-bank demand: Official purchases provide a source of demand, but rising gold reserve values do not necessarily mean central banks bought substantially more gold. Price appreciation can increase the reported value of existing holdings.
- Consumer demand and supply: Jewelry, bars and coins, and technology uses contribute to demand. Mine production and recycling affect supply; high prices can also influence recycling and consumer buying.
In its December 2025 Gold Outlook 2026, the World Gold Council’s model attributed roughly 12 percentage points of gold’s year-to-date 2025 performance to high risk, primarily geopolitical risk. It attributed another 10 percentage points to reduced opportunity cost from a weaker dollar and marginally lower rates, and roughly 16 percentage points to geopolitical risk and dollar weakness together. These are the Council’s model attributions, not proof that those factors caused a fixed share of the price move.
What central-bank gold holdings do—and do not—show
A rise in gold’s share of official reserves is sometimes presented as proof that central banks are broadly abandoning the dollar. Federal Reserve staff’s July 2025 analysis cautions against that conclusion: gold’s share of official reserves had more than doubled from below 10% in 2015 to above 23% at the report’s then-current point, while physical holdings had risen by less than 10%. The authors said much of the increase in share reflected a more than 200% rise in gold’s price.

The Federal Reserve staff’s September 2026 analysis also found that the post-2024 rise in gold’s market value reflected private-sector demand and higher prices, including inflows to physical gold-backed ETFs, rather than a parallel spike in official purchases. Its authors concluded that official demand alone would not have explained the 2025 price surge. That analysis reported that at end-2025, world gold reserves were valued at $5.1 trillion, including $4 trillion excluding U.S. holdings, compared with $3.9 trillion in foreign official U.S. Treasury holdings. The relative values largely reflected valuation changes, the staff cautioned; by June 2026, foreign official Treasury holdings again exceeded world gold reserves excluding the United States.

| Indicator | Why it matters | What it may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Broad U.S. dollar direction | It affects the affordability of dollar-quoted gold for buyers using other currencies. | Dollar weakness can support gold; strength can weigh on it, all else equal. |
| Real yields and rate expectations | Yields affect the opportunity cost of holding an asset that pays no interest. | Lower yields can ease that cost; higher yields can create a headwind. Market interpretation and other conditions matter. |
| Risk conditions and risk appetite | Uncertainty can change demand for perceived defensive assets. | More risk may support gold, but liquidity needs and positioning can reverse a move. |
| ETF flows and investor positioning | Private investment demand can change quickly and reinforce momentum. | Inflows may support prices; outflows or profit-taking may pressure them. |
| Central-bank demand | Official purchases add demand and reflect reserve-policy choices. | Purchases can support gold; reserve values can also rise because the metal’s price rose. |
| Jewelry, bars and coins, recycling, and mine supply | Consumer demand and supply respond to prices and other economic conditions. | High prices can reshape demand and recycling; the dollar alone does not capture the net effect. |
If comparing a chart, identify whether it shows a dollar gold price or a local-currency price, specify the dollar index or exchange-rate pair, name the yield measure, and set a clear frequency and date range. Mixing a nominal dollar gold quote with a translated local price can make the relationship look different than it is.
How to interpret forecasts and dated market figures
Forecasts are scenarios, not price targets that apply regardless of conditions. The World Gold Council’s December 2025 Gold Outlook 2026 modeled a 5%–15% rise for its conditional “shallow slip” scenario, a 15%–30% rise for its “doom loop” scenario, and a 5%–20% correction for a bearish reflation scenario. Each range was measured from that scenario’s then-current starting level and depended on its stated macroeconomic assumptions; none is a current quote or guaranteed outcome.
The same December 2025 outlook estimated central-bank demand of 750–900 tonnes for 2025 in the report’s data context and gave a wide-ranging 2026 forecast dependent on macro and policy drivers. Treat those as dated estimates and forecasts, not final 2025 results or a settled 2026 total. The Council’s outlook also expected mine and recycled supply to be near prior-year levels, while describing investment and bar-and-coin demand as significant and jewelry tonnage as weaker; these too were expectations published in that outlook, not final counts.
