Gold Retirement Solutions Explains Gold IRAs: What They Are and How They Work

“Gold IRA” is a label for gold exposure through an existing IRA, not a separate IRS-defined account. Compare physical-metal custody with gold-backed ETFs and know what to verify with your provider.

A “Gold IRA” is a marketing label, not a separate account type defined by the IRS. It usually refers to an existing IRA—such as a traditional or Roth IRA—that provides exposure to gold, either through eligible physical metal held under specific custody rules or through a gold-backed exchange-traded fund (ETF). Those routes work differently, so check your provider’s capabilities, custody process, and written fees before opening or changing an account.

What does “Gold IRA” mean?

The IRS recognizes IRA categories such as traditional and Roth IRAs; it does not define a separate “gold IRA” category. The label describes an investment approach within an IRA, not a new tax status. The underlying account type and its tax treatment still matter.

The World Gold Council’s Joseph Cavatoni, Senior Market Strategist, North America, put the distinction this way: “What is not a defined account type by the IRS is a ‘precious metal’ or ‘gold’ IRA account, and anyone insisting you need this type of account to invest in precious metals could be misrepresenting the facts.” This is Cavatoni’s statement, not an IRS quotation. World Gold Council, September 26, 2023.

Can an IRA hold physical gold?

In some circumstances, yes—but buying gold personally and placing it in an IRA is not enough to make the investment compliant. Federal tax rules generally treat an IRA investment in a collectible as a distribution, with statutory exceptions that cover certain coins and bullion. Qualifying bullion also must meet a custody condition: physical possession must be with a bank or an approved non-bank trustee.

Eligibility and custody are separate questions. The metal must fall within an applicable exception, and the account must use an arrangement that satisfies the custody rules. Confirm the specific product and process with the IRA’s trustee or custodian before buying or transferring anything. See the IRS collectibles guidance and IRS Publication 590-B (2025).

Physical metal and gold-backed ETFs compared

A gold-backed ETF is another way to get gold exposure through an IRA, if the provider supports it. It is a financial instrument held in the account, not physical bullion stored for the IRA. It can avoid the physical-metal storage process, but it is not the same kind of ownership.

Consideration Eligible physical metal through an IRA Gold-backed ETF through an IRA
What the IRA holds Physical metal that qualifies under the applicable collectible exception. Shares in a financial instrument providing gold exposure.
Custody and logistics Requires an eligible product and compliant custody; physical possession must be with a bank or approved non-bank trustee. Uses the IRA provider’s process for holding and trading the ETF; no physical-metal storage process for the account holder.
Costs to check Ask for current written account, transaction, custody, and storage charges where applicable. Ask for current written account and transaction charges and review the ETF’s own costs.
Selling or taking a distribution Ask how the custodian handles a sale or distribution of the metal under the account’s rules. Ask how the provider handles trading and distributions under the account’s rules.
Provider capability The provider must support the eligible metal and custody process. The provider must make the ETF available within the IRA.

Neither route is right for everyone, and the available process depends on the IRA provider. The World Gold Council recommends asking an existing trustee or custodian whether it supports the investment route you are considering. World Gold Council, September 26, 2023.

Questions to ask your current IRA provider

  1. Can this IRA hold my chosen investment? Ask whether the provider supports the specific physical product or gold-backed ETF, rather than assuming a new account is required.
  2. For physical metal, how is eligibility confirmed? Ask which products the provider accepts and how it verifies that the metal qualifies under the applicable exception.
  3. Who holds the metal, and where? Ask for the trustee or custodian arrangement and how it meets the physical-possession condition.
  4. What are the total costs? Request a current written, itemized schedule covering account, transaction, custody, and storage charges where relevant. For an ETF, ask about account and transaction costs and review the fund’s own expenses.
  5. How do selling and distributions work? Ask what steps, timing, and charges apply if you sell the investment or take a distribution from the IRA.
  6. What happens to my existing account and its tax treatment? Ask the provider to explain the proposed transaction and its account-specific procedures. Consult a qualified tax professional about your personal circumstances before acting.

When should you pause before opening an account?

Slow down if a salesperson says you must open a new “Gold IRA” to invest in precious metals, pressures you to act quickly, or presents a particular provider or product as necessary without explaining alternatives. A gold-backed ETF may be available through an existing IRA provider, while physical metal requires eligible products and compliant custody. Ask for the claims, process, and costs in writing, then verify them with your current provider. The World Gold Council specifically cautions readers about high-pressure tactics and claims that a new account is required. World Gold Council, September 26, 2023.

How to evaluate Gold Retirement Solutions’ information

Gold Retirement Solutions describes itself as an information hub focused on gold IRAs and discloses that affiliate links generate income to support its site. Treat a provider link as potentially commercial, not as an independent endorsement. The disclosure does not establish which partner programs or terms are currently active.

Use any provider comparison as a starting point: check whether the provider supports your intended investment, verify the custody arrangement if considering physical metal, and compare current written costs and procedures. Do not rely on fee ranges or allocation recommendations as universal or independently verified terms; obtain the provider’s current itemized schedule and assess your circumstances separately.
