A gold or silver IRA is generally a self-directed IRA that holds qualifying metals through an IRA custodian or trustee. Not every coin or bar qualifies, and the account owner generally cannot keep IRA metals at home: eligibility depends on the exact item and the required custody arrangement. Before a purchase, check the IRS rules and get the custodian’s written acceptance, fee schedule, and transaction terms.

What is a gold or silver IRA?

“Gold IRA” and “silver IRA” are common names for self-directed individual retirement accounts that hold certain precious metals. The account remains an IRA; the fact that its asset is metal does not remove the account’s tax and custody rules.

The IRS generally treats metals and coins as collectibles, but provides specific exceptions for certain coins and qualifying bullion. That makes eligibility a question about the precise product—not simply whether a sales listing calls it gold, silver, or “IRA eligible.” The IRS’s Publication 590-A (2025) describes the collectible rule and exceptions; Publication 590-B (2025) explains relevant possession rules. Check the applicable statutory category as well as the trustee’s own acceptance policy.

Which gold and silver can an IRA hold?

The IRS exceptions include specified U.S. gold coins; one-ounce silver coins minted by the Treasury Department; certain platinum coins; and qualifying gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion. Bullion must meet a required fineness and be held in physical possession by a bank or approved non-bank trustee, as described in IRS guidance.

These categories do not make every coin, bar, round, collectible, or jewelry item eligible. A dealer’s label is not an IRS determination, and a trustee may decline an item even if a buyer believes it fits a statutory category. Have the custodian confirm the exact product, form, and documentation in writing before directing IRA funds to a seller.

Asset category What IRS guidance says What to confirm
Specified U.S. gold coins Included among the exceptions described in IRS Publication 590-A (2025). That the exact coin falls within the specified category and the trustee accepts it.
One-ounce Treasury-minted silver coins Included among the exceptions described in IRS Publication 590-A (2025). That the coin matches the stated category and satisfies the trustee’s requirements.
Qualifying bullion Gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion may qualify when it meets the applicable fineness requirement. IRS guidance describes physical possession by a bank or approved non-bank trustee. The product’s exact specifications, required custody, and trustee acceptance.
Other coins, rounds, bars, or jewelry Not automatically covered by the exceptions; metals and coins are generally treated as collectibles. Do not assume eligibility from the material, marketing, or a seller’s description.

Can you store IRA gold or silver at home?

IRS Publication 590-B (2025) says, “The coins must be in the possession of the custodian or trustee of the IRA.” It also says that if the owner or beneficiary takes possession, the coins are treated as distributed. For qualifying bullion, IRS guidance describes physical possession by a bank or approved non-bank trustee.

Accordingly, do not take IRA-owned coins or bullion home or arrange personal possession on the assumption that a “home storage IRA” label makes it permissible. The official guidance described here does not validate any particular provider’s home-storage arrangement. Ask the custodian to document where and how the assets will be held and who has possession.

What happens if an IRA buys an ineligible collectible?

If an IRA invests in a collectible outside the statutory exceptions, the amount invested is generally treated as distributed to the account owner in the year of the investment, under IRS Publication 590-A (2025). Depending on the person’s circumstances and the applicable distribution rules, that can result in income tax and possibly the 10% additional tax on an early distribution.

The IRS lists exceptions to the additional early-distribution tax, including reaching age 59½, certain qualified education expenses, and qualified first-time homebuyer distributions up to $10,000. That $10,000 limit is one exception to the additional tax; it does not make every withdrawal tax-free. Whether an exception applies depends on the facts and the rules for the particular distribution. Consult a tax professional promptly if an IRA has already acquired a potentially ineligible item.

How do transfers, rollovers, and distributions fit in?

Moving retirement funds and buying metal are separate steps: an eligible product does not by itself make a funding transaction compliant, and a correctly handled account transfer does not make an ineligible product permissible. Before moving money, ask the current and receiving custodians for written instructions covering the transaction, timing, reporting, purchase authorization, and any fees. Do not withdraw funds personally or send personal funds to a dealer on the assumption that the transaction will later count as an IRA investment.

Ask in advance how the account handles a sale, a cash distribution, or an in-kind distribution of metal, including what paperwork and tax reporting may follow. The specific process and terms are provider-dependent; get them in writing and have a tax adviser review any transaction that could create a taxable distribution.

What should you check before choosing a custodian or dealer?

A self-directed IRA custodian generally administers and holds assets; it does not necessarily assess whether an investment is sound. The SEC’s Investor.gov alert, Self-Directed IRAs and the Risk of Fraud, warns that custodians generally do not evaluate investment quality or legitimacy, validate promoters, or verify financial information supplied by them. An account being accepted by a custodian is not a recommendation or a guarantee.

Compare the full arrangement, not just an advertised account-opening charge. The SEC notes that self-directed IRA fees may be significantly higher than fees for other account types and may include opening, annual, administrative, transaction, and asset-specific charges. Request an itemized schedule and clarify when each charge recurs.

  • Custody and eligibility: Confirm the custodian or trustee’s authority, the exact metals it accepts, where the assets will be held, and what possession and account documentation you will receive.
  • Total cost: Ask about account opening, ongoing administration, transactions, storage, insurance, and asset-specific fees. Get the schedule in writing.
  • Price and liquidity: Ask how the purchase price is set, what markup or spread applies, how a future sale would be priced, and whether there is a ready resale process. Seek an independent valuation where possible.
  • Conflicts: Find out whether the dealer is affiliated with the custodian, receives compensation, or has other financial interests, and ask how those conflicts are disclosed.
  • Promoter claims: Independently check licensing or registration claims and be cautious about unsolicited offers. Do not rely on a custodian, dealer, or promoter to verify another party’s claims.

The SEC also cautions that alternative investments can involve limited disclosures and liquidity, complex tax rules, and increased fraud risk. Verify account-statement values independently where possible rather than treating a reported value as proof that the asset can be sold for that amount.

Can a precious-metals IRA owe unrelated business income tax?

IRS Publication 590-A (2025) states that when an IRA has at least $1,000 of unrelated business gross income, the trustee is required to file Form 990-T. This is a filing threshold tied to unrelated business gross income; it does not mean that ordinary ownership of qualifying bullion automatically generates such income. Ask a tax adviser about a specific account activity rather than inferring the tax treatment from the asset alone.
