Choose gold jewellery when wearing or gifting it is the point, a bullion coin when you want a physical gold item, and digital gold only after checking the provider’s terms and taking account of SEBI’s dated public caution. These are different ways to buy, not interchangeable products. The official sources cited here do not establish which option has the lowest total cost, is easiest to resell, or will earn the most.
How the three options differ
| Option | Best fit | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery | Wearing or giving a gold article | Hallmark details, HUID, and invoice |
| Physical bullion coin | Owning a physical bullion item | Issuer and stated fineness; do not assume jewellery hallmark rules apply |
| Digital gold | A platform-mediated purchase | Provider terms and SEBI’s public caution dated November 8, 2025 |
There is no comparable current cost or return data in the official sources cited here to rank these choices. For an actual offer, compare the full purchase price and fees with its buyback, redemption, storage, and delivery terms before paying.
If you choose jewellery, verify the hallmark and paperwork
Check the hallmark components
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) describes the HUID-era hallmark as three elements: the BIS logo, purity expressed in caratage and fineness, and a unique six-character alphanumeric HUID. BIS lists gold grades as 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958), and 24KS (995). These are purity grades, not price or investment recommendations. BIS Hallmarking FAQs
Verify the HUID and read the invoice
- Before purchase, use the official BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check the hallmarked jewellery’s authenticity details and purity. This checks the HUID record; it is not a physical test of the metal. BIS Consumer Protection
- Check that the invoice identifies the article and states its net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. BIS Jewellers guidance
Know the testing and complaint route
A consumer can have jewellery or a sample tested at a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. The centre charges for the test and issues an assay report identifying the article as marked. If testing shows that hallmarked jewellery has less purity than marked, BIS describes compensation as two times the amount of the purity difference for the article’s weight, plus testing charges. Do not assume a future resale price
BIS says consumers may sell old hallmarked or unhallmarked jewellery to jewellers, but this does not establish what a particular jeweller will pay or deduct. Ask the buyer for its valuation and deductions before treating an expected resale amount as part of your decision. BIS Mandatory Hallmarking FAQ
If you choose a bullion coin, check the issuer and fineness
Bullion coins have a distinct BIS treatment from jewellery. BIS says gold bullion coins of 999 or 995 fineness may be hallmarked by BIS-approved refineries or mints, and lists gold bullion coins among exceptions to the mandatory hallmarking order for jewellery. Do not expect every coin to carry the same jewellery hallmark or HUID treatment. BIS Jewellers guidance

SEBI’s official website lists a public caution titled “Caution to public regarding dealing in ‘Digital Gold’,” dated November 8, 2025 (PR No. 70/2025). The listing establishes that the caution was issued, but the detailed grounds and legal implications are not stated here. It does not support a blanket claim about the status of every provider or the protections attached to a particular product. SEBI public caution
