Tata Mutual Fund’s view, as reported by The Economic Times on October 6, 2026, is that gold’s correction may offer investors who missed the earlier rally a better entry point than at the start of the year. That is an attributed market opinion, not a forecast or assurance that prices will rise. For Indian buyers, the latest reference rates cited here are IBJA’s indicative rates for October 6; they exclude GST and making charges.
Is October 2026 a good time to buy gold?
There is no reliable way to determine from the available figures alone whether October is a good time for every buyer. Tata Mutual Fund’s reported view is that the price correction has improved the entry point for investors who missed the rally. Its attributed statement also says the medium-term outlook remains supported by central-bank demand, fiscal risks and geopolitical uncertainty. Those are reasons for the fund’s view, not guarantees of future performance.
The report is secondary coverage rather than the underlying October Tata outlook document, and it does not establish a suitable purchase price or allocation for an individual. Whether to buy depends in part on why you want gold: jewellery or another physical item serves a different purpose from an investment holding, and each has different costs and conditions.
Are gold prices lower than at the start of 2026?
Upstox reported Tata Mutual Fund’s approximate international-price figures: about US$5,595 per ounce at the January 2026 peak and around US$4,138 per ounce at the time of its October report, a stated correction of roughly 26%. These are approximate, secondary-reported international figures attributed to Tata—not Indian retail prices or independently verified spot-market data. They also compare the January peak with the later report period, not necessarily with the exact price on January 1.

Indian buyers should use a domestic reference rate for a domestic purchase. IBJA’s October 6 indicative rates vary by gold purity and are quoted per gram.

How to estimate the cost of physical gold
Check purity and product form
Match the quoted rate to the item’s stated purity. A 24-karat gold coin, for example, should be compared with a rate for the relevant fine-gold purity, while jewellery may be made in a different karat. Product form matters too: jewellery, coins and other gold items can carry different making charges and seller pricing.
Ask for the complete bill
Use the IBJA rate as a reference, then ask the seller for an itemised final price that identifies the gold weight and purity, the seller’s price, making charges and GST. The IBJA figures above exclude the latter two charges; the reference rate by itself cannot tell you what a particular seller or listing will charge.

Gold ETF and Sovereign Gold Bond exposure are different from buying an item
Tata Gold ETF
Tata Mutual Fund’s May 2026 factsheet says its Tata Gold ETF seeks to provide returns in line with domestic physical-gold prices, subject to tracking error. It also says the investment objective is not assured. An ETF is a financial product, not a retail gold item; review the current scheme documents for its live terms, costs and dealing conditions before investing.
Sovereign Gold Bonds
The cited Reserve Bank of India notice concerns the 2022–23 Sovereign Gold Bond scheme. It describes gold-denominated government securities with an eight-year tenor and premature redemption after year five on an interest-payment date. These are terms of that historical scheme notice; it does not establish that a new issue is currently available.

Tata Mutual Fund’s October view, as reported by The Economic Times and Upstox, is a market assessment based on the correction and its stated medium-term supports. It does not settle whether gold suits your needs, predict a particular return, or establish that the quoted international figures match the price available to an Indian buyer. The IBJA rates offer a domestic reference on one date; a physical purchase still depends on purity, product, seller and charges.
