GOG is no longer owned by CD PROJEKT: co-founder Michał Kiciński acquired the storefront. For players, the immediate message from GOG is that its DRM-free approach, customers’ library access and offline installers will continue. Those are company assurances about its current direction, not an independent guarantee about every game or every future policy change.
Who owns GOG now?
GOG is owned by Michał Kiciński, one of the storefront’s co-founders and a co-founder of CD PROJEKT. The seller, CD PROJEKT S.A., had owned GOG as a wholly owned subsidiary before the sale. CD PROJEKT’s current report no. 20/2025 says the parties signed the share purchase agreement on 29 December 2025 and scheduled the transfer for 31 December 2025. Its transaction report records the sale of all 2,715 GOG shares—100% of the shares and votes—for PLN 90,695,440.
Why did CD PROJEKT sell the store?
CD PROJEKT said the divestment fits its strategy of concentrating on video game development and publishing, and projects based on its franchises. That is the seller’s stated rationale; the announcement does not establish how the sale will affect GOG’s long-term finances or competitive position.
CD PROJEKT also said GOG would operate independently and that CD PROJEKT RED games, including upcoming studio titles, would remain available on GOG. This is an announced plan for RED games, not a guarantee covering every future release from every publisher.

Is GOG still DRM-free?
GOG says yes. In its acquisition announcement, the company said, “DRM-free is more central to GOG than ever.” This describes GOG’s stated philosophy; it is not an independent audit of the terms attached to every title. As with any digital storefront, check the specific game’s listing and terms if a particular feature matters to your purchase.
Can you still access your library and download games offline?
GOG says customers will keep access to their libraries and offline installers. Its customer-facing explanation says: “Your library stays yours to enjoy: same access, same offline installers, same sense of ownership.” The statement communicates GOG’s commitment, but the announcement was not an independent test of downloads or installers for individual games.

What the sale does—and does not—tell players
The ownership change and GOG’s current assurances are clear; the broader consequences are not yet established by the announcements. They do not show whether the catalog will grow or shrink, how the company’s finances will develop, or how its position relative to Steam will change. For now, the practical distinction remains the policy attached to each purchase: GOG says its approach remains DRM-free and that offline installers and library access continue.
