What did GM say about the production pauses?
The announced plan called for production pauses at Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, to begin in January 2026 for upgrades, with operations anticipated to resume by midyear. That was a planned schedule; the announcement alone does not establish whether either facility resumed on time. GM’s 2025 Form 10-K later said North American EV demand slowed following U.S. policy changes, including the termination of consumer purchase incentives and less stringent emissions regulations. Does “freefalling EV sales” accurately describe the figures?
The headline phrase is stronger than the comparable sales evidence cited here establishes. GM’s July 2026 release reported 714,896 total U.S. vehicle sales in the second quarter, down 4.2% year over year. GM attributed the decline to a smaller EV market, discontinued vehicles, and inventory constraints.
