GM scheduled a temporary production pause at its Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri from September 29 through October 19, 2025, citing supply-chain issues and business needs. Operations were expected to resume October 20, but the available reporting does not confirm that they did. Reports said most workers across the plant’s three shifts would be affected; the specific unavailable part and the shortage’s underlying cause were not identified.

Why did GM idle the Wentzville plant?

GM said it temporarily adjusted production schedules to address supply-chain issues and align with overall business needs. Contemporaneous reports also described the disruption as a parts-availability problem. Neither the unavailable part nor the root cause was identified in the reporting.

GM spokesman Kevin Kelly told Road & Track, quoting a statement published by the Detroit Free Press: “We have temporarily adjusted production schedules at Wentzville Assembly to address supply chain issues and align with overall business needs.”

When was production expected to resume?

The pause was scheduled to run from September 29 through October 19, 2025. GM said normal operations were expected to resume October 20. That date was an expectation reported at the time, not confirmation that the plant restarted on schedule. Autobody News and other contemporaneous coverage reported the schedule.

Kelly’s statement, as quoted by Road & Track, said: “The plant is expected to resume normal operations on Oct. 20.” The Denver Gazette, in reporting credited to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, also quoted GM spokesperson Diana Forbes saying the plant was expected to return to normal operations October 20.

Which vehicles does Wentzville build?

Wentzville Assembly builds the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, as well as the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans. GM’s U.S. operations profile lists the plant in Wentzville, Missouri, as a vehicle assembly facility that opened in 1983 and is represented by UAW Local 2250.

What was reported about workers?

GM Authority reported that a letter co-signed by plant executive director Eric Shelhorn and UAW Local 2250 chairman Jon Daugherty said most workers across all three shifts would be temporarily laid off. The letter named skilled trades, stamping, body shop, and final process work, while noting that some support teams and selected departments might continue operating. Autobody News likewise described most workers on all three shifts as affected. Those accounts describe the reported scope; they do not establish a verified final headcount.

What later plant updates do—and do not—show

Later developments provide context about Wentzville, but do not explain the 2025 interruption. GM Authority reported in July 2026 that GM planned an approximately $157 million investment at the plant, including paint-shop modernization. In September 2026, it reported that Wentzville had built its seven millionth vehicle and that 2026 Colorado production was then scheduled to conclude October 16, with 2027 production slated to start October 19. The report cautioned that future production dates can change. Neither update identifies the part or cause behind the 2025 supply disruption.
