GameStop’s January 2026 closure wave involved hundreds of U.S. stores, but the clearest figures cover different time periods. A January 30 report said more than 470 stores were planned to close by January 31; GameStop later reported 727 U.S. closures across its entire fiscal 2025, which ended that day. The 727 figure is not a count of stores closed in January alone.
How many GameStop stores closed?
There are two relevant figures, and they measure different things:

These figures should not be added together or treated as competing counts of the same period. The more-than-470 figure was a contemporaneous report of stores on the January plan; 727 is the company’s later actual total for the full fiscal year. The sources do not establish a final count limited strictly to calendar January.
Which GameStop stores are closing?
The cited reporting does not provide a complete, verified official list of affected addresses. It therefore cannot confirm whether a particular store near you was on the closure list. Check that location’s current status directly with GameStop or contact the store before making a trip; do not assume an older list or notice reflects its present status.

Why did GameStop close stores?
GameStop says it reviews its store portfolio and selects locations for closure using factors that include market conditions and individual store performance. The company reported that this review resulted in 727 U.S. closures in fiscal 2025. Its filing does not establish that digital sales alone, or any single factor such as rent, explains the closures.
In its August 2026 filing, GameStop described optimizing its retail fleet as part of its operational priorities and characterized physical locations as fulfillment and service anchors. That is the company’s strategic framing; it does not show that every closed store was unprofitable or that the company is abandoning its store network.

What happened after the January closure wave?
GameStop said it did not anticipate closing a significant number of stores in fiscal 2026, which ends January 30, 2027. This is management’s outlook, not a guarantee. Its filing also describes the domestic footprint as a core part of its logistics infrastructure strategy.
In September 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that select stores closed earlier were reopening starting September 11. The report did not give a total number of reopenings, so this is evidence of selective reopenings—not proof that the closures were broadly reversed.

How does this compare with earlier closures?
GameStop’s fiscal 2025 closures followed a previous round: TechRadar reported in January 2026 that the company’s fiscal 2024 annual report cited 590 U.S. store closures that year. Fiscal-year totals cover their stated company reporting periods, not individual calendar months.
For scale, KBRA’s January 2026 analysis cited a February 2025 baseline of 3,203 GameStop stores worldwide, including 2,325 in the United States. That is a historical store count, not a post-closure total, and should not be used to calculate how many locations remain today.
