Samsung SDI acquired GM’s 49.99% stake in the New Carlisle, Indiana, project in August 2026. The latest company update says construction is ongoing and the plant is intended to make energy-storage batteries first—not EV cells. No new completion or production date has been announced.
What the companies agreed to in 2024
On August 28, 2024, Samsung SDI said it had completed and signed an agreement with General Motors to establish a U.S. electric-vehicle battery joint venture. The planned facility is on a 680-acre site in New Carlisle, Indiana. The companies announced an investment of approximately $3.5 billion.
Samsung SDI projected initial annual production capacity of 27 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with the potential to expand to 36 GWh. The companies targeted mass production in 2027 and expected the project to create more than 1,600 jobs. These were announced plans, not reported operating results. Samsung SDI’s August 2024 announcement describes the original agreement and projections.
The original product plan
The facility was meant to produce high-performance, nickel-rich NCA prismatic cells for future GM electric vehicles. Samsung SDI said the prismatic design offered high energy density and a hard exterior with a venting system. Those are the company’s descriptions, not findings from an independent comparison or safety test.

What changed: ownership and construction
In May 2026, GM told GM Authority that construction would be paused “to align production capacity with current demand.” GM also said the companies would communicate plans for the site at a future date. GM Authority reported the pause on May 15, 2026, quoting GM’s statement.
On August 11, 2026, Samsung SDI announced that it had acquired GM’s 49.99% stake in the joint venture, SynergyCells. The company cited market changes, including slower-than-expected EV demand, and said the firms would pursue forms of cooperation beyond the original joint venture. Its newer update says the plant remains under construction. It does not provide a revised construction schedule or production date. Samsung SDI’s August 2026 statement sets out the ownership change and current plan.

What the Indiana plant is expected to make now
Once the facility is complete, Samsung SDI says it will initially produce batteries for energy-storage-system (ESS) applications. ESS batteries store electricity for uses such as balancing supply and demand; this is a different initial purpose from supplying cells for GM vehicles.
Samsung SDI also says the site could potentially produce prismatic cells co-developed with GM in the future. The companies signed a separate development agreement for next-generation prismatic cells, which Samsung SDI describes as designed for high energy density and fast charging, for possible future EV applications. That collaboration is not a commitment to begin EV-cell production at the plant, and the facility is not reported to be making batteries now.

The deal remains a significant planned industrial investment, but the original description—a jointly owned factory with a 2027 target for GM EV batteries—is no longer a reliable account of the project. Samsung SDI now owns the venture stake GM sold, the latest stated first use is ESS battery production, and the 2027 target has not been replaced with a new date. The sources do not establish a confirmed restart milestone, a completed plant, or an updated schedule for EV-cell production.
