The changes affected facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but they were not one simultaneous shutdown: some plants paused production, some had existing downtime extended, and GM planned to finish and ship certain vehicles built without required modules. The reports describe a historical disruption, not a new 2026 shutdown.
Which GM plants were affected in September 2021?
Reuters reported on September 2, 2021 that GM would reduce production at eight North American assembly plants. The actions and affected vehicle lines varied by location; the available reporting does not provide a comparable unit-loss figure for each plant.
| Plant | Location | Reported schedule change | Vehicle lines identified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fort Wayne Assembly | Indiana, United States | Production was to halt the following week; GM also planned to use downtime to repair and ship unfinished vehicles. | Pickup trucks |
| Silao Assembly | Mexico | Production was to halt the following week; GM also planned to use downtime to repair and ship unfinished vehicles. | Pickup trucks |
| Wentzville Assembly | Missouri, United States | Two weeks of downtime. | Midsize trucks and vans |
| CAMI Assembly | Canada | Previously scheduled downtime was extended. | Equinox SUVs |
| San Luis Potosi Assembly | Mexico | Previously scheduled downtime was extended. | Equinox SUVs |
| Ramos Arizpe Assembly | Mexico | Previously scheduled downtime was extended. | Traverse and Buick Enclave crossovers; Cadillac XT5 and XT6 |
| Lansing Delta Township | Michigan, United States | Production cuts were reported; the cited account does not state a duration. | Traverse and Buick Enclave crossovers; GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5 and XT6 |
| Spring Hill | Tennessee, United States | Production cuts were reported; the cited account does not state a duration. | Traverse and Buick Enclave crossovers; GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5 and XT6 |
These schedules should not be read as a complete plant-by-plant tally of lost vehicles. Reuters’ account identifies different actions and product lines, but does not give a uniform output-loss measure across all eight facilities. Reuters’ September 2, 2021 report covers the cuts.
Why did GM cut production?
GM attributed the production changes to semiconductor supply constraints. Chips are used in vehicle electronic systems, and shortages limited the modules and parts available to complete scheduled assembly. In a February 9, 2021 statement, GM called semiconductor supply an issue facing the entire industry and said it was working with suppliers to mitigate the effects. GM’s February statement concerned earlier plant downtime, rather than announcing the September schedule.

- Made from single-crystal silicon wafer material for authentic semiconductor teaching and research.
- Ideal for electronics courses, microfabrication demonstrations, and STEM student projects.
- Also suitable for art installations, photography props, and chip design exhibitions.
GM spokeswoman Kristen Ackerman gave a broader explanation in July 2021, saying schedule adjustments were driven by temporary parts shortages tied to semiconductor constraints in international markets experiencing COVID-19 restrictions. That comment described the fluid supply situation at the time; it was not a direct explanation of each September plant’s schedule. S&P Global reported the July explanation and schedule adjustments.
What happened to vehicles that were already partly built?
A production pause did not mean every incomplete vehicle was abandoned. GM said in February that it intended, in some cases, to build vehicles without certain modules and complete them when semiconductor supplies became available. For the September cuts, Reuters reported that GM planned to use downtime to repair and ship unfinished vehicles from several affected plants, including Fort Wayne and Silao. The company said it would make up as much lost production as possible, but the cited statements do not establish how much output was ultimately recovered.

- PROTECTIVE PACKAGING: Carefully packaged with protective layers to help minimize scratches, dust and handling damage during storage and transportation.
How did the September cuts fit into GM’s 2021 shortage response?
The September action followed earlier adjustments, but the announcements are not interchangeable. On February 9, GM said downtime at Fairfax in Kansas, CAMI in Canada and San Luis Potosi in Mexico was connected to semiconductor supply, and said it would reassess those extensions in mid-March. In July, the company made further scheduling changes as shortages persisted. By September, Reuters reported cuts at eight North American assembly plants. Axios’ September 7 account described the production reshuffle and the tight vehicle market.
That market context was also specific to 2021. Axios reported that U.S. light-vehicle inventory at the end of August 2021 was 70% below the level two years earlier, citing Morningstar analyst Dave Whiston; it reported GM inventory in August 2021 was 86% below August 2019. Kelley Blue Book data reported by Axios put the average new-car transaction price at $42,736 in July 2021, up 8.2% from July 2020. These dated figures help explain the environment around the production cuts; they are not current inventory or pricing estimates.

Does this mean the plants are shut down now?
No conclusion about current operations follows from these 2021 reports. They document temporary schedules during the semiconductor shortage, including both new pauses and extensions of earlier downtime. They do not establish the operating status of any named plant in October 2026.
