The Associated Press (AP) reported the breakdown as roughly 1,200 jobs at the Detroit-area plant and 550 at the Ohio plant. AP also reported separate temporary layoffs in Ohio and Tennessee; those should not be added to the roughly 1,700 job-cut figure.
How many GM jobs are being cut?
AP reported about 1,700 job cuts at GM manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio on October 29, 2025. Its breakdown, based on reporting by The Detroit News and confirmed by GM, was approximately 1,200 jobs at a Detroit-area EV plant and 550 at an Ohio battery plant. The headline total is rounded reporting, not a precisely audited company-wide count.
AP separately reported 850 temporary layoffs in Ohio and 700 in Tennessee. These are temporary layoffs, not additional permanent cuts in the roughly 1,700 figure. GM said affected workers may be eligible for a significant portion of their regular wages or salary plus benefits. That was a statement about eligibility, not confirmation of what every worker received.
Which GM plants are affected?
| Location and operation | Reported action | What the figures mean |
|---|---|---|
| Detroit area, Michigan — EV manufacturing | About 1,200 job cuts, reported by AP on October 29, 2025 | Reported cuts at an EV plant; the cited report does not provide a more specific plant name. |
| Ohio — Ultium Cells battery plant | 550 job cuts, reported by AP on October 29, 2025 | Battery-cell manufacturing jobs, separate from vehicle assembly. |
| Ohio — manufacturing operations | 850 temporary layoffs, reported by AP | Temporary layoffs, separate from the reported job cuts above. |
| Tennessee — manufacturing operations | 700 temporary layoffs, reported by AP | Temporary layoffs, not part of the roughly 1,700 reported cuts. |
GM expected operations to resume by mid-2026 after upgrades, according to the October 2025 reporting. That was the company’s expectation at the time, not confirmation here that operations resumed on schedule.

- IMPORTANT: RED 2-PIN CONNECTOR REQUIRED – This battery ONLY works with the red 2-pin connector shown in the product photos. Many ride-on toys use similar-looking connectors that are not compatible. Compare your connector carefully before purchasing.
- IMPORTANT: VERIFY BATTERY SIZE BEFORE PURCHASE – Battery dimensions are 5.9 x 2.5 x 3.9 inches (151 x 65 x 99 mm). Measure your existing battery and battery compartment before ordering. This battery may not fit all ride-on vehicles.
- HIGHER 9.5AH CAPACITY FOR LONGER PLAYTIME – Premium sealed lead acid battery provides extended runtime compared to many standard 7AH batteries while delivering reliable power for compatible ride-on vehicles.
- INCLUDES REPLACEABLE 40A FUSE HARNESS – Includes SafeAMP 12V 9.5AH SLA battery, red 2-pin connector harness, and replaceable 40-amp fuse for added protection and convenient installation.
- DESIGNED FOR COMPATIBLE 12V RIDE-ON VEHICLES – Intended as a replacement battery for ride-on toys using the red 2-pin connector and requiring a battery measuring approximately 151 x 65 x 99 mm.
Why is GM cutting EV and battery jobs?
GM said the decision reflected weaker near-term demand for electric vehicles and changes in regulation. In a statement to AP on October 29, 2025, the company said: “In response to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment, General Motors is realigning EV capacity.” Ultium Cells separately said it was adjusting production in response to changes in customer plant demand.
Those statements give GM’s stated rationale, but the reporting does not quantify how much of the decision was caused by EV adoption, regulation, tax incentives, or customer demand individually.
How did GM describe its broader EV capacity changes?
In a January 2026 Form 8-K filing with the SEC, GM said North American EV demand began slowing in 2025. The filing connected the slowdown to the termination of certain consumer tax incentives and less stringent emissions regulations. GM wrote: “With the termination of certain consumer tax incentives and the reduction in the stringency of emissions regulations, industry-wide consumer demand for EVs in North America began to slow in 2025.”

The filing described a broader capacity realignment beyond the October 2025 layoffs. GM said it would shift its Orion, Michigan, facility from EV production to full-size SUVs and pickups with internal-combustion engines, and sell its interest in the Lansing Ultium Cells facility to LG Energy Solution. These later strategic actions provide context; they do not change the reported details or status of the 2025 layoffs.
What did GM report about the financial cost?
In its January 2026 SEC filing, GM reported approximately $1.6 billion in EV-related charges for the three months ended September 30, 2025. It expected approximately $6.0 billion in EV-related charges for the three months ended December 31, 2025. The latter amount was an estimate when GM filed; the cited filing does not establish it as a confirmed final charge.

On September 29, 2026, GM announced plans for Ultium Cells to produce lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic cells at Spring Hill, Tennessee. GM projected construction and facility upgrades would be completed in 2028 and create 500 new jobs. Those are company projections, not verified outcomes, and do not independently confirm what happened after the production pause associated with the earlier layoffs.

- 100% compatible with all Power Wheels 12-Volt using the Gray Battery (NOT Compatible with Orange Top Battery)
- Connector will fit perfectly in Power Wheels charger and Power Wheels vehicle
- Dimensions: 151x65x99 mm / 5.9x2.5x3.9 in
- SLA Battery - 12V 9.5AH (Same specifications as original Fisher-Price battery)

GM also claimed the planned LMR cells would deliver 33% greater energy density than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at comparable cost. That is GM’s technology claim, not an independent comparative test result.
For historical context, GM projected in January 2022 that its Lansing battery plant would employ more than 1,700 people once fully operational. That was a forecast made at the time, not evidence of the plant’s later workforce or of how many people were subsequently laid off there.
