Saudi Aramco chief executive Amin Nasser warned on 5 October 2026 that the world’s oil supply cushion was “scarily thin.” The figure he cited—less than six billion barrels of commercial inventories, most of them not practically available—is about stockpiled oil, not the amount of oil proven to exist underground. Separately, ICIS reported Brent crude futures above $102 a barrel in Friday morning Asian trading amid renewed Strait of Hormuz risks; that is a dated market snapshot, not a live price.
What did Nasser mean by “scarily thin”?
Speaking at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London on 5 October, Nasser said: “The system is already strained, and with precious little else the world can turn to, the supply resilience cushion is scarily thin.” The quote was reported by Yahoo Finance in a syndicated account of his remarks; ICIS also reported his inventory estimates the following day.
Nasser said less than six billion barrels of commercial inventories remained and that most were “not practically available.” He said inventories had been almost 10 billion barrels at the start of the crisis, and nearly three billion barrels of gross oil supply had been lost since it began. These are Nasser’s reported estimates, not independently verified global accounting figures.
The title’s use of “reserves” is therefore colloquial. The figures concern oil held in inventories and supply lost during a disruption—not proven underground reserves, which are a different measure. “Not practically available” also matters: barrels counted in inventories are not necessarily ready to reach a buyer quickly, in the right location or in the form needed.

What do the reported figures measure?

Commercial inventories and government strategic reserves are also distinct categories. Nasser’s cited estimate is explicitly about commercial inventories. The reporting does not give a comparable total for strategic government reserves, so the commercial figure cannot be used to infer how much governments could release.
Why is Brent back above $100?
Oil prices can rise when traders fear that supply will be interrupted or become harder to move. The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for seaborne oil exports, so renewed risk around the passage can add concern about the amount of crude reaching buyers. With the available supply cushion described as limited, traders may have less reason to assume a disruption can be absorbed easily.

ICIS reported Brent crude futures above $102 per barrel in Friday morning Asian trading amid renewed Hormuz risks. Its displayed report excerpt does not identify the exact Friday date or futures contract for that above-$102 observation, so it should not be mistaken for a current quote. For comparison, ICIS reported that at 04:42 GMT on 1 October 2026, Brent December futures were $96.93 a barrel and WTI November futures were $89.24.
Those are futures prices for specified contracts at a particular time, not a guaranteed price for physical oil, a retail petrol price or a live market level. The dated observations show movement over a short period, but they do not establish that one event alone caused the change.

What is known about the Houthi-related attacks?
ICIS’s 6 October account attributed reports of attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and Khurais to media reports. It also said Yemen’s Saudi-backed government had announced a campaign against Houthi-held territory and that the Houthis claimed the attacks. The account does not independently confirm that the facilities were attacked or quantify any resulting effect on oil production or exports.
That distinction matters when connecting headlines to prices: the reported market move was amid renewed Hormuz risks, while the facility-attack details remain attributed claims. The available reporting does not establish that the claimed attacks reduced output or caused a particular price increase.

How much could the G7 release help?
ICIS reported that the G7 agreed on 2 October to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel over four months. The agreement was not a one-time delivery of the full volume: ICIS said the release would take place over that period and that a substantial diesel release was planned in the first 20 days. It did not disclose the exact product split.
A release can add supply to the market, but its practical effect depends on timing, product, location and delivery. Crude oil is not the same as diesel ready for use, and a commitment does not mean every barrel has arrived. The reported figure alone is not enough to calculate how much the measure would offset the nearly three billion barrels of gross supply loss cited by Nasser.

What does this mean for household budgets?
A higher crude price can put upward pressure on fuel costs, but it does not translate mechanically or immediately into the same percentage increase at a petrol station. Retail prices also depend on refining, distribution, taxes, currency movements and local competition. The cited futures observations do not predict what drivers in any particular country will pay.
For personal budgeting, treat the above-$102 report as a dated signal of market risk rather than a price forecast. If fuel or transport costs are material to your household, use your local pump price and actual spending to plan; the reporting here does not establish a retail-price outlook.
