Giving Compass was described at its 2017 launch as a website to help donors learn about charities and charitable giving. A GeekWire profile reported that it brought together nonprofit news, studies and research on effective giving, along with opportunities to connect, find philanthropy events and volunteer. That account is useful background, but it does not verify whether the site or those features are available today.
What Giving Compass offered when it launched
In a July 30, 2017 profile, GeekWire described Giving Compass as an information and community website for people interested in philanthropy. Its reported offerings included nonprofit news and studies, research about effective giving, ways for donors and charities to connect, philanthropy-event listings, and volunteer opportunities. The site was based in Seattle and covered information and events from around the country, according to the article.
The profile said the project was funded primarily through a catalyst grant from the Raikes Foundation. That is a description of its launch-era funding, not a statement about its current finances. The 2017 coverage does not establish whether Giving Compass is operating now, or whether its original services remain available.
How to decide what you want your donation to do
A useful first step is to name the reason for giving and the change you hope to support. The 2017 profile recognized motivations ranging from responding to a friend’s request or thanking an institution that helped you to making an impulse gift or developing a sustained interest in a cause. Those motives can coexist; a personal connection does not prevent you from asking practical questions about a charity’s work.

Immediate relief or longer-term change?
Some giving addresses urgent needs, such as providing a bed or disaster assistance. Other work aims at longer-term changes, including policy shifts or durable programs. An organization may do both. Before donating, consider which kind of work matters to you and whether the organization explains how your gift supports it.
What change does the organization intend to make?
Look for a clear account of the need, the activities the organization undertakes, and the improvement it hopes to achieve. Outcomes—measurable changes in social or environmental conditions—can help donors assess whether work is making a difference. They are one part of the picture, not a guarantee that every effect can be measured neatly or attributed to one donation.

Why overhead alone is a poor test
A low overhead ratio does not, by itself, show that a nonprofit is effective. Spending on technology, skilled staff and other organizational capacity can support the work an organization is trying to do. Judging charities only by the share of spending classified as overhead can miss whether their programs are useful or whether they have the resources to deliver them well.
Outcome data can add perspective, but measurement is often costly and difficult, and the available data differ across organizations and fields. Larger organizations may have more capacity to define and report metrics, which can make smaller grassroots groups harder to compare—not necessarily less effective. Consider an organization’s mission, intended change, evidence and operating context together, rather than treating one ratio or score as a complete verdict.

- 【4 x 6-Inch Sign Holder for Any Event】 The built-in holder fits standard 4 x 6-inch paper or cards. Swap the insert to relabel the box as a tip jar, tip box, suggestion box, ballot box, raffle box, or a go-to among donation boxes for fundraising events and giveaways. - 【Donation Box with Lock and 2 Keys】 The keyed lock keeps collected cash and tickets secure while you step away from the table or between pickups. Two keys are included, one for the organizer and one spare. Seat the lid fully before locking
- 【Compact 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0-Inch Countertop Size】 Measuring 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0 inches, it fits bake sales, office front desks, concession stands, reception counters, and service stations without crowding your display space, yet holds plenty for steady collections
A practical pre-donation checklist
- Define your aim: Decide whether you are responding to an immediate need, supporting longer-term change, or both.
- Understand the work: Check what the organization does and how those activities connect to its stated goals.
- Read outcome claims in context: Ask what changed, how it was measured and what the measure cannot show.
- Assess capacity, not just cost: Consider whether spending on people, systems and technology may help the organization deliver its work.
- Use more than one signal: Weigh mission, evidence, context and reporting capacity; do not let a single overhead figure decide the gift for you.
What the 2017 profile can—and cannot—tell donors
GeekWire’s launch-era account offers a useful framework for thinking about charitable giving: preserve the human reason for giving, then ask what change the donation is meant to support and what evidence helps you judge progress. It does not confirm Giving Compass’s present-day status, current features or current funding. Treat it as a historical description of the service and its approach, not as a verified guide to an active website.
