Price correction: GitHub Copilot Pro is the $10-per-month plan for individuals; Copilot Business costs $19 per granted seat per month. Pro can be worthwhile if you code regularly and use its suggestions or AI tools, while Business is priced for organizations that need centralized administration and governance—not simply better autocomplete. Prices and plan details below reflect GitHub documentation checked August 18, 2026.
GitHub Copilot prices in 2026
GitHub lists the following monthly prices in USD. Individual plan prices are subscription prices; Business and Enterprise prices are per granted seat. AI-credit allowances shown are from GitHub’s current billing documentation and may not describe annual individual subscribers still on legacy billing.
| Plan | Intended user | Listed price | Current AI-credit allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Individual developers | $0 | Limited usage |
| Student | Verified students | Free, subject to eligibility | Allowance varies |
| Pro | Individual developers | $10/month | $15/month total allowance |
| Pro+ | Individual power users | $39/month | $70/month total allowance |
| Max | High-volume individual users | $100/month | $200/month total allowance |
| Business | Organizations | $19/granted seat/month | 1,900 AI Credits per user/month |
| Enterprise | Organizations on GitHub Enterprise Cloud | $39/granted seat/month | 3,900 AI Credits per user/month |
GitHub lists these plans and prices in its plan documentation; individual allowances are detailed in its individual billing documentation, and organization allowances in its organization and Enterprise billing documentation. Enterprise is tied to GitHub Enterprise Cloud; GitHub says Copilot is not currently available for GitHub Enterprise Server.
What a team pays
At list price, two Pro subscriptions cost $20 per month, while two Business seats cost $38 per month before any additional usage. The $18 difference buys organization-oriented controls and protections, not just a different autocomplete allowance. Because Business billing is based on granted seats, an organization should remove assignments it no longer needs.

What Copilot Pro includes for $10
GitHub describes Pro as an individual plan with unlimited real-time code completions using included models, access to selected models, and Copilot chat, cloud agent, and code review capabilities. The plan also works across supported environments, including Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, Xcode, Neovim/Vim, GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile, and Copilot CLI. Feature availability differs by plan and environment, so supported access does not mean every feature works identically in every editor.
The key limit is that unlimited completions do not mean unlimited use of all Copilot features. Code completions and next-edit suggestions on paid plans do not consume AI Credits. Chat, agents, Copilot CLI, cloud agent, Spaces, Spark, code review, and third-party coding agents can consume credits depending on the feature and model. Pro’s current individual-plan table gives a total allowance valued at $15 per month in GitHub AI Credits; additional usage may be available if you enable it. See GitHub’s plan comparison and billing overview.

What Business adds—and why it costs more
Business is an organization plan, not a $10 version of Copilot. Its value is primarily administrative and governance-related:
- Centralized assignment and management of seats, including easier employee offboarding.
- Organization-level policy controls and budget settings.
- Organization billing and pooled AI-credit usage at the billing-entity level.
- Business-oriented governance and support.
- IP indemnity, which GitHub identifies as a major difference from individual plans. Indemnity is not a guarantee that every generated suggestion is risk-free.
Business includes 1,900 AI Credits per user per month under GitHub’s current organization billing documentation. Enterprise lists 3,900 per user per month. One AI Credit is valued at $0.01 USD for usage-based billing; feature and model use can draw on credits differently. Organizations can monitor use and configure budgets at user, organization, cost-center, or enterprise levels. Review GitHub’s documentation on usage-based billing for organizations and enterprises before deciding how to permit extra usage.

How the June 2026 AI-credit billing change affects the real cost
GitHub began replacing premium-request billing with usage-based billing on June 1, 2026. In the current model, cost depends on model and token usage rather than simply counting requests. A brief question to a lightweight model may use little; a long agent task that examines many files with a more capable model may use substantially more. That makes an allowance’s dollar value more useful than an old request count, but it does not predict how long it will last for a particular workflow.
Some existing annual individual subscribers may remain on legacy request-based billing until their annual plan ends. GitHub’s billing-change explanation describes the transition. Older pages quoting figures such as 300 or 1,500 premium requests may refer to legacy billing or older plan details; do not assume they describe a newly subscribed user’s current allowance. Check the billing information for your own account or organization to determine which model applies.

What happens when credits run out?
When included AI Credits are exhausted, metered features may stop unless additional paid usage is enabled. Availability and controls depend on the account or organization settings; do not assume every user can continue automatically or without charge. GitHub documents budget and usage controls in its billing guidance. A practical way to manage the cost is to review usage, choose models appropriate to the task, and set a budget before allowing additional usage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Copilot Pro worth $10 per month?
Pro is a good fit if you code often
For an individual who codes several times a week, $10 can be reasonable if autocomplete saves time or Copilot chat, agents, or code review become part of regular work. It is particularly straightforward for freelancers who need their own access across client projects and for developers who want a personal subscription without organization-level administration. The value is personal: compare the monthly charge and any extra usage with how much you actually use, rather than treating vendor productivity claims as a guaranteed return.

Free may be enough for occasional use
If you code only now and then and Free’s limits cover your needs, paying for Pro may not make sense. Check whether you qualify for free access as a student, educator, or maintainer of a popular open-source project; eligibility is subject to GitHub’s rules. The current options are described on GitHub’s plan page.
Heavy agent use needs a closer cost check
Pro is less compelling if your main use is long, autonomous agent sessions and you regularly exhaust the included credit allowance. Since model and token usage affect consumption, there is no single number of agent tasks that can be promised for the allowance. Monitor actual use and decide whether the plan plus any permitted extra usage still fits your budget.
When is Copilot Business worth $19 per seat?
Business makes sense when a company needs consistent control over who has access, which features are allowed, how usage is budgeted, and how access is removed when someone leaves. It is also the relevant plan when the organization values pooled usage and GitHub’s stated IP indemnity. A small team should weigh those benefits against the $19 per granted seat monthly cost; buying individual Pro subscriptions is cheaper at list price but does not provide the same organization-level administration or protections.
As of April 22, 2026, GitHub had temporarily paused new self-serve Business sign-ups for organizations on GitHub Free and GitHub Team, and its plan page directed prospects to contact sales. This is a dated availability condition, not a permanent feature of the plan; check the current plan page before budgeting around a self-serve purchase.

Before paying personally, check for employer access
If your employer provides a Business or Enterprise seat, use the organization-managed plan in accordance with your company’s policies rather than assuming a personal subscription is appropriate for work. GitHub documents that when a Pro subscriber is assigned a Business or Enterprise seat, the personal plan is automatically canceled and a prorated refund is issued for the remaining billing period. This describes GitHub’s billing behavior; it does not determine your employer’s internal rules. Details are in GitHub’s Copilot billing documentation.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Choose Free if your use is occasional and its limits are enough, or first check whether you qualify for a free eligibility-based plan.
- Choose Pro if you are an individual developer who codes regularly, wants paid-plan completions and individual AI features, and can keep credit use within a comfortable budget.
- Choose Business if you are buying for a team and need centralized seats, policies, organizational billing, budgets, or IP indemnity.
- Consider Enterprise only if your organization uses GitHub Enterprise Cloud and needs the enterprise plan; it is not simply the next step for an individual seeking more completions.
