There is no reliable, apples-to-apples ranking of the 10 most expensive gifts ever given. The figures commonly cited mix historical construction costs, reported purchases, an art collection valuation, insurance coverage and even the estimated cost of a wedding. Here are 10 extraordinary examples, with what each number actually measures—and where a comparable value is unavailable.
How to interpret the amounts
“Expensive” can refer to the price paid at the time, a later estimate of present value, the cost of building something centuries ago, or the value assigned to a donation. Those measures are not interchangeable. The figures below are attributed to their sources and dates; they are not a definitive ranking, and no new inflation conversions or appraisals are applied.
Forbes’s 2016 roundup is the source for most of the reported dollar figures. Its estimates provide a useful starting point, but they do not establish a consistent valuation method across the examples. Official sources help verify historical context for some gifts, but generally do not provide comparable modern-dollar values.
10 extraordinary gifts and gift-related gestures
1. French support for the American Revolution
Reported amount: approximately $20 billion in today’s money, according to Forbes in 2016. This is an estimate of France’s broad support for the American War of Independence, not the price of one physical present. It belongs in a discussion of gifts on a grand scale only with that distinction made clear.

France’s later gift of the Statue of Liberty was a separate diplomatic gesture. The White House archive describes the statue in the context of the countries’ alliance during the Revolution and their shared ideals, but gives no monetary value for it.
2. The Taj Mahal
Reported amount: $827 million in “today’s money,” as estimated by Forbes in 2016. Shah Jahan commissioned the mausoleum in memory of Mumtaz Mahal. The amount is Forbes’s modern-equivalent estimate of construction cost, not an official appraisal, and the article does not state its conversion method.
Construction dates vary by how the project is defined: India’s Ministry of Culture dates it to 1631–1648, while the official Taj site says the wider complex was completed in 1653. Neither official source supplies an audited modern-dollar cost. The $827 million figure should therefore be treated as a reported estimate, not a verified current value.

3. Leonard Lauder’s Cubist art collection
Reported value: $1.1 billion at the time of the 2003 donation, as reported by Forbes in 2016. Lauder donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is a major act of philanthropy, rather than a private present to an individual, and the figure is a reported collection valuation—not a documented sale price.
4. The Koh-i-Noor diamond
Value: described by Forbes as inestimable; no reliable dollar amount is established here. Forbes says Duleep Singh presented the 186-carat diamond to Queen Victoria in 1849. It also reports that Prince Albert had it recut to 105.6 carats in 1852. Those transfer and stone details are attributed to Forbes; a comparable market value is not available.
5. Morton Plant’s mansion-for-pearls exchange
Reported transaction: a $1 million pearl necklace in 1917, which Forbes equated to $20 million in contemporary dollars in its 2016 article. Plant exchanged his Fifth Avenue mansion for the necklace. Forbes says the mansion would be worth hundreds of millions today, but supplies neither a valuation date nor a method for that claim.

This was a barter arrangement, not a cash gift with a single fixed present value. The necklace’s reported transaction amount and the mansion’s later, unspecified estimate describe different things.
6. Richard Burton’s diamond gift to Elizabeth Taylor
Reported purchase: $1 million in 1969, or $6.6 million in the modern-dollar comparison used by Forbes in 2016. Burton bought the diamond for Taylor. Forbes reports that Taylor later donated the proceeds from its sale to help fund a hospital in Botswana; the donation is distinct from the original gift and purchase.
7. Anil Ambani’s yacht gift
Reported estimate: $80 million, according to Forbes in 2016. Ambani reportedly gave his wife the 34-metre yacht Tian in 2008. The amount is an estimate reported by Forbes, not a disclosed purchase price or verified appraisal.

8. The Hope Diamond
Reported historical purchase: $300,000 in 1911, which Forbes compared to about $7.6 million in its 2016 article. Reported insurance figure: $250 million. Forbes says Edward Beale McLean bought the 45.52-carat diamond, and that Harry Winston later donated it to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in 1958.
The reported $250 million is an insurance figure, not an established sale price or market valuation. It should not be compared directly with the price paid in 1911 or with a cash gift.
9. Mikhail Gutseriev’s son’s wedding
Reported estimate: $1 billion for the 2016 event, according to Forbes. Forbes described the celebration as a multi-day, multi-city wedding. This is an estimate of event spending, not necessarily the value of a discrete gift received by one person, so it is not directly comparable with a necklace or donation.

10. Tahra Palace
Documented historical purchase: 40,000 Egyptian pounds in 1939, according to the Presidency of Egypt. The Presidency says King Farouk bought the palace and gave it to Queen Farida; it reports the property’s total area as 20,000 square metres. The purchase figure is not a modern appraisal, and no current value is established by that source.

France’s gift of the Statue of Liberty is among history’s best-known diplomatic presents, but the sources cited here do not attach a monetary value to it. The statue arrived in the United States on June 17, 1885. The White House archive connects the gift to the countries’ alliance during the American Revolution and to shared ideals—not to the estimated cost of French support during the war.
That distinction matters. The National Museum of American Diplomacy explains that gifts of state can welcome or honor people and help cultivate diplomatic relationships. The National Archives describes such gifts as enduring emblems of cooperation and friendship. Their significance is not captured by a price tag. In President Grover Cleveland’s words at the statue’s inauguration on October 28, 1886: “We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected.”
What “the 10 most expensive gifts” can—and cannot—tell you
The examples show the range of what a headline about costly gifts might include: a monument commissioned in memory of a spouse, private jewelry and a yacht, an art collection donated to a museum, state diplomacy, a palace, and an event estimate. They do not prove a strict top ten: sources disagree on what counts as a gift, and most figures do not measure the same financial concept.
A useful way to read any such claim is to ask three questions:
- What was given? A personal present, a public diplomatic gift, a charitable donation or an event?
- What does the figure measure? A transaction, a reported estimate, a construction-cost conversion, a collection valuation or insurance coverage?
- When and on what basis? Is the figure the original amount, a dated modern-dollar comparison or an unspecified estimate?
Without consistent answers, a ranked list can be entertaining, but it cannot establish which gift was truly the most expensive.
