A fund delegates portfolio decisions and may simplify some administration; direct investing offers more control but puts selection, recordkeeping and compliance on you. Neither route is automatically cheaper, safer or more tax-efficient. The right fit depends on the specific scheme or broker, your investment size, desired control, liquidity needs and tax situation.
What do you own in each route?
With a GIFT City fund, you own units in a pooled vehicle. The fund manager selects and holds the underlying portfolio. With direct overseas investing, you own the foreign securities you choose. That difference determines how much investment work and control you take on: a fund delegates security selection and portfolio management, while direct investing lets you choose positions, weightings and trade timing within the broker’s available products and terms. Direct ownership does not by itself ensure a diversified portfolio.

These distinctions are also described in DSP’s comparison of GIFT City funds and direct US investing. DSP is a fund provider, so treat its comparison as provider-described information, not an independent assessment of every fund or broker.
How do costs and minimum investments compare?
There is no established universal cost winner. Compare the full cost of the particular fund or direct-investing service, rather than relying on a headline fee: entry requirements, ongoing charges, currency conversion, transactions and withdrawals can all affect the result.

| Cost or term | GIFT City fund | Direct overseas investing |
|---|---|---|
| Initial investment | Check the scheme and share class. DSP’s product page accessed October 11, 2026 states a USD 5,000 initial subscription for each of its Class A Regular and Class B Direct classes. These are DSP-specific terms, not a market-wide minimum. DSP product page | Minimums depend on the broker, security and transaction terms; no comparable current provider minimum is established here. |
| Ongoing fund or service charge | DSP states a total expense ratio (TER) ceiling of up to 1.75% for Class A Regular and up to 1% for Class B Direct. Check current scheme documents for the applicable class and charges. DSP product page | Check the specific service’s brokerage, custody, market-data and other charges. No comparable current provider prices are established here. |
| Additional investment | DSP states USD 500 for additional subscriptions to its product. This is a provider-specific term. DSP product page | Depends on the broker, security and transaction terms; no comparable current amount is established here. |
| Currency conversion and cash movement | Check the fund’s funding instructions, bank conversion rate and any applicable charges. | Check remittance, FX conversion and withdrawal charges with the broker and authorised dealer bank. |
DSP’s published figures are useful as an example of how fund classes can differ, not as a benchmark for all GIFT City schemes. For either route, request the current schedule of charges and work out the effect on the amount you plan to invest and how often you expect to trade or add money.
How do remittance rules affect an Indian resident?
The Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) framework states an aggregate outward-remittance ceiling of USD 250,000 per resident individual per financial year. The RBI page displaying this figure was updated February 11, 2016; it also points readers to the 2022 Overseas Investment Rules, Regulations and Directions. Because the page is an older revision, confirm the current rules and operational process with an authorised dealer bank before remitting. RBI LRS Master Direction

DSP says its fund is funded through LRS. Direct overseas investments also use the applicable remittance framework, but the regulatory classification and reporting requirements can depend on the investment. The relevant IFSCA legal text says a portfolio manager may take an individual resident in India as a client only to the extent that the individual is eligible under FEMA to invest offshore and within the RBI LRS allowance; it also describes investments in securities and financial products in IFSCs, India or foreign jurisdictions subject to applicable provisions. Check current rules rather than treating either route as exempt from remittance requirements. IFSCA legal database

Tax treatment is not interchangeable across all GIFT City funds, direct holdings or investors. The available provider statements describe DSP’s product specifically; they do not establish a blanket investor-level tax exemption for every GIFT City fund. Your residency, fund structure, income type, security domicile, account ownership and applicable law can change the analysis.

DSP’s stated treatment for its fund
DSP Fund Managers IFSC Private Limited says on its product page that its fund pays tax at fund level and publishes post-tax NAV. The page states rates of 14.95% for long-term gains after more than 24 months, 42.744% for short-term gains and 35.88% for dividend or unit income. These are DSP’s stated fund-level rates for its product, not general rates for all schemes or a determination of an individual investor’s tax liability. DSP also states: “Good news — no tax is payable by the investor at redemption, as the fund pays tax on the income at its end.” Read the current offer documents and seek qualified tax advice before relying on that statement for your circumstances. Direct holdings and investor-level obligations
Direct investors may need to track gains in both the foreign currency and rupees, consider foreign withholding and potential foreign tax credit claims, and meet foreign-asset disclosure obligations in India. DSP’s comparison also flags potential US estate-tax exposure for US-domiciled securities. These are issues to assess, not universal conclusions: the applicable treatment depends on tax residency, security domicile, treaty rules, ownership and current law. The Income Tax Department’s statutory materials are relevant for checking particular provisions, but the sections reviewed do not establish one blanket rule for every investor or holding. For direct holdings, retain transaction confirmations, acquisition dates, costs, sale proceeds, foreign tax documents and currency-conversion records. Ask a tax adviser familiar with overseas investments which Indian disclosures and claims apply to your particular holdings.

Control and portfolio construction
A fund manager makes the selection and portfolio decisions within a scheme’s mandate; the investor chooses the fund and class. The fund’s strategy and concentration depend on its actual mandate and holdings. DSP describes its own Global Equity Fund as focused and actively managed, so do not assume every GIFT City fund is passive or broadly diversified. Direct investing gives the investor more say over individual securities and portfolio weights, but also makes the investor responsible for research, trading decisions and diversification.

Access to cash
Fund dealing days, cut-off times, NAV calculation, redemption windows, exit charges and settlement are scheme-specific. DSP says its described fund processes redemptions at the relevant dealing-day NAV and that proceeds may be available within seven business days; this is not a universal promise for other funds. Direct holdings are sold security by security through a broker. The time to access cash depends on market hours, settlement, broker withdrawal processing and any remittance steps. Check the fund documents or broker terms before investing money you may need quickly.

Neither route removes investment risk. A fund’s value can fall with its holdings, and it adds manager, scheme, liquidity, custody and operational considerations. Direct investing leaves security selection and portfolio management to you and can involve currency movements, foreign-market access and additional compliance work. Both approaches can expose you to market and foreign-exchange risk; neither guarantees capital protection or a positive return.
IFSCA regulates and develops financial services in India’s IFSCs, but regulation is not a guarantee of returns or protection from market loss. Before subscribing, verify the fund manager and the scheme on IFSCA’s current registers, review the offer documents, and understand the scheme’s mandate, fees and exit terms. Which route may fit your priorities?
| Your priority | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Delegating security selection | A GIFT City fund may fit if you are comfortable with the manager and scheme mandate. Review portfolio holdings, strategy, costs and redemption rules. |
| Choosing individual securities and trade timing | Direct investing offers more control, subject to the broker’s available securities and terms. Consider whether you can manage research, recordkeeping and reporting. |
| Keeping administration manageable | Compare what the particular fund handles with what you would need to track yourself. A fund does not remove the need to understand its tax and scheme documents. |
| Minimising total cost | Build a like-for-like estimate using current fund charges or brokerage, custody, FX, remittance and withdrawal costs. The available figures do not establish that either route is cheaper overall. |
| Needing predictable access to cash | Compare scheme-specific dealing and redemption terms with the broker’s sale, settlement and withdrawal process. Neither route should be assumed to provide immediate access. |
| Managing a complicated tax profile | Get advice based on your residency, security domicile, account ownership and other relevant facts before choosing a vehicle or making a remittance. |
Checks to complete before investing
- Confirm eligibility and remittance steps. Ask your authorised dealer bank how current LRS and overseas-investment rules apply to your intended transaction, and confirm any scheme-specific eligibility requirements.
- For a fund, verify the manager and scheme. Use IFSCA’s current registers and read the latest offer documents; confirm the mandate, share class, charges, dealing dates, redemption process and applicable tax disclosures.
- For direct investing, check the full service terms. Confirm which securities are available and how brokerage, custody, currency conversion, market access, settlement and withdrawals work.
- Map the tax and recordkeeping obligations. Establish what records, foreign-asset disclosures, withholding documentation and potential foreign tax credit claims may apply to your situation.
- Match the route to your control and liquidity needs. Decide whether you want to manage individual positions and whether the documented access-to-cash process suits your time horizon.
This comparison assumes an Indian resident individual considering global equity exposure. Non-resident Indians, OCI holders, US persons and people subject to another jurisdiction’s tax or financial rules may face different eligibility, remittance and tax treatment.
