Geoffrey Hinton named plumbing as a “good bet” for people worried about AI taking jobs, but he did not say plumbers would never be replaced. His point was narrower: AI systems may take longer to match people at physical manipulation, making plumbing less exposed to near-term automation than work centered on digital information. He also qualified his prediction with a caveat about humanoid robots.
What Geoffrey Hinton actually said about plumbing
In a 2025 interview on The Diary of a CEO, host Steven Bartlett asked Hinton what career advice he would give people facing a future with increasingly capable AI. Hinton said it would be a long time before AI was as good as people at physical manipulation, then called plumbing “a good bet” and described plumbers as “less at risk.” He contrasted them with legal assistants and paralegals, whose text-heavy tasks he thought could be more exposed. Read the interview transcript.
Hinton’s caveat matters: he said the advantage holds “until the humanoid robots show up.” That is a personal judgment about the relative pace of AI and robotics, not a formal employment forecast. The viral claim that plumbing “won’t be replaced” or “will always be needed” makes his statement sound more certain than it was. A June 27, 2025 article repeated the stronger framing, but the interview is the more direct evidence of what Hinton meant. See the secondary article.
Hinton is a prominent machine-learning researcher often called the “Godfather of AI.” His expertise makes his view relevant to the discussion of AI capability, but it does not turn his career advice into a labor-market guarantee.

Why plumbing may be harder to automate than desk-based tasks
The key distinction is not that plumbing requires a uniquely human quality. It is that much of the work must be done in physical places that are variable, partly hidden and difficult to represent completely in advance. A software system may process text or records remotely; a plumbing repair often requires a person or machine to find and manipulate the right components on site.
Every building presents different conditions
A plumber may find undocumented pipes, corroded fittings, cramped access, poor lighting, moisture, or a previous repair that changed the original layout. The actual cause of a leak or blockage may only become clear after inspecting or opening part of the system. A robot would need to perceive the conditions, choose an appropriate intervention and adapt if the site differs from expectations.
Diagnosis and repair are linked
The work is not simply following a fixed repair recipe. A plumber has to decide where a problem originates, whether a repair is temporary or replacement is warranted, and how to avoid damaging the building or creating a safety hazard. Customer descriptions can help, but they do not always identify the cause. AI may offer diagnostic suggestions; someone still has to verify what is happening and take responsibility for the work.

Physical demands are part of the job
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2025 Occupational Requirements Survey measures physical demands and work conditions across occupations; it reports that workers spend an average of 55.1% of the workday standing. That figure is an all-occupation average, not a plumber-specific estimate. Plumbing can involve kneeling, lifting, climbing, awkward postures and exposure to wet, dirty or uncomfortable spaces. See the BLS Occupational Requirements Survey.

AI can affect plumbing without replacing the plumber
An occupation is made up of tasks. Even if a person remains necessary for physical repair, software can change how the surrounding work is done. For a plumbing business, likely areas for AI or other automation include:
- Taking calls, answering routine customer questions and booking appointments.
- Scheduling jobs, dispatching technicians and optimizing routes.
- Preparing estimates, invoices, inspection records and compliance documentation.
- Tracking parts and inventory or prompting replenishment.
- Reviewing video, images or sensor data to flag possible leaks and suggest diagnostic checks.
- Providing technical references and training support in the field.
These tools could reduce paperwork or help a plumber handle more jobs. They could also change what employers expect from workers, including comfort with digital records and diagnostic systems. Automation of tasks does not, by itself, show that an entire occupation will disappear.

- FUNCTIONAL SANDPAPER FOR PIPE SURFACE TREATMENT: Two pieces of P240 - grit sandpaper effectively clear rust, dirt and residues on pipe ends to enhance sealing performance. It can be cut freely into different sizes and reused during plumbing repairs
- STABLE ANTI - CORROSION CONSTRUCTION: Both wrenches and compression sleeve puller adopt corrosion - resistant surface treatment. Made of tough and wear - resistant materials, they stand up to frequent use in residential maintenance and professional plumbing applications
The same distinction applies to Hinton’s comparison with legal assistants and paralegals. Text, research and record-handling tasks can be exposed to AI tools, but that does not establish that every role in those occupations will vanish. The Bureau of Labor Statistics discusses how potential AI effects are considered in its employment projections, including case studies across legal, business, financial, computer, architecture and engineering occupations. Read the BLS analysis.
What robots could change first
AI software alone cannot turn a recommendation into a physical repair; that requires capable hardware. Robotics may nevertheless change plumbing gradually rather than through a single moment when all plumbers are replaced. Tasks in controlled, repeatable settings—such as some new-construction installation, inspection or material handling—could be easier to automate than a difficult repair in an older building.

Human plumbers may then spend more time diagnosing unusual problems, managing exceptions, explaining options and supervising systems. Even if robots do not perform every job, greater productivity could affect how many workers are needed for particular tasks. Hinton’s own qualification acknowledges that advances in humanoid robots could change the comparison.

Is plumbing a safer career choice in 2026?
“Safer from AI” is not the same as secure employment, good working conditions or a good fit for a particular person. Plumbing demand and career prospects also depend on local repair and construction activity, housing conditions, licensing rules, health, working hours and the economics of employers or contractors. The BLS employment-projections program currently covers 2024–2034 and projects 5.2 million net new jobs across the U.S. economy; that broad figure does not establish a plumbing-specific outlook or guarantee an individual job. See the BLS employment projections.
Current evidence also cautions against treating exposure as a job-loss forecast. Anthropic’s March 2026 labor-market analysis distinguishes theoretical AI capability from observed workplace exposure. It reports no systematic increase in unemployment among highly exposed workers since late 2022, while noting suggestive evidence of slower hiring for younger workers in exposed occupations. Those findings describe the labor market it studied; they do not establish that plumbing is permanently protected. Read the analysis.

- Physical fit: Consider whether you can tolerate lifting, kneeling, awkward access, exposure to unpleasant conditions and the possibility of long-term wear or injury.
- Customer service: Residential work often means explaining a problem and repair options to customers, sometimes during urgent or stressful situations.
- Training and licensing: Requirements vary by state and locality. Ask the relevant licensing authority about apprenticeship, supervised-work and classroom requirements, exams, and any journeyperson, master-plumber or contractor credentials.
- Local opportunities: Compare demand in repair, new construction, commercial or industrial work, utilities and maintenance in your area. A national employment projection cannot answer whether a particular market is hiring.
- Employment or ownership: Apprenticeship and wage employment differ from running a service business. Ownership can bring additional responsibilities for customers, insurance, vehicles, equipment, payroll, compliance and cash flow.
- Technology: Trade knowledge paired with digital tools may be more useful than avoiding them. Field-service software, sensor data and AI-assisted references can become part of the job.
In the United States, Apprenticeship.gov is an official starting point for information about registered apprenticeships. It does not replace checking local licensing rules or confirming that a specific program is available and appropriate in your area.
The practical verdict
Hinton named a plumber—not every skilled trade—as a comparatively strong bet because hands-on work in varied physical environments is harder to automate than many digital tasks. That makes plumbing a plausible near-term resilient career, not an AI-proof one. Someone who enjoys practical problem-solving and accepts the training, physical demands and customer-facing responsibilities has a stronger reason to consider it than someone choosing it solely out of fear of AI.
