Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s Santa Fe estate was listed in January 2026 for $6.25 million and later sold. The final sale price was not disclosed in the reports reviewed, so $6.25 million is the asking price—not a confirmed closing price.

Did Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe estate sell?

Yes. The approximately 53-acre property entered contract eight days after it was listed, and Sotheby’s International Realty later reported that it sold after about a month on the market. A February 2026 report said the sale had closed the prior week, but did not give the contract price. New Mexico does not require home sale prices to be made public, according to that report.

The dates vary slightly across coverage: Realtor.com reported the listing on January 15, 2026, while subsequent reporting identified January 16 as the formal listing date. Neither date changes the distinction between the known asking price and the undisclosed final price.

What was the asking price—and what was the sale price?

The estate was listed for $6.25 million in January 2026. The reviewed reports do not establish how much the buyer ultimately paid. Calling it a “$6 million sale” would therefore mistake a rounded description of the asking price for a reported transaction price.

#1 Best Overall

Listing agent Tara Earley of Sotheby’s International Realty told Realtor.com that some buyers might be averse to purchasing a property where a death had occurred, while others would not be. Earley said the agents marketed the home on its merits and priced it at what they considered fair market value. That is the agent’s assessment, not an independent appraisal or evidence that the asking price matched the eventual sale price.

What was on the Santa Fe property?

The gated Santa Fe Summit compound covered approximately 53 acres and had about 13,000 square feet across three buildings. Albuquerque Journal reported the building areas and total bedroom and bathroom counts as follows:

Building or feature Reported details
Main residence 8,813 square feet
Guesthouse 2,367 square feet
Studio 1,824 square feet
Entire compound Six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms across the property

Architectural Digest described the main residence as a contemporary-meets-adobe design, with floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed beams, native stone, a library, a large kitchen and fireplaces. Outdoor amenities included a lap pool, hot tub and putting green.

A compound built around separate uses

The couple assembled the property over time. Hackman used the studio for painting, and Arakawa kept concert pianos there, according to local reporting. The arrangement gave the compound distinct living, guest and creative spaces rather than concentrating all of its interior area in the main house.

What happened to the home before the listing?

Hackman and Arakawa were found at the home in February 2025. Reporting on investigators’ findings said Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and Hackman died days later of heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

The estate was professionally staged for the sale, and the estate was to cover repairs that included a new roof, according to local reporting. The transaction was handled as an estate sale; the reports do not establish that the couple’s children personally managed the listing.

What the sale does—and does not—show

The reported contract and sale timeline concerns one distinctive property. The available reporting does not provide a comparable-sales set or a market benchmark that would support calling the asking price high or low for Santa Fe luxury real estate. It also does not reveal the final price, so the sale cannot be used to infer a discount or premium from the $6.25 million asking price.
