Reports in December 2022 said data linked to 5.7 million Gemini users was circulating on hacking forums. Gemini’s own notice confirmed a third-party vendor incident involving customer email addresses and partial phone numbers, but did not confirm the 5.7 million count. Gemini said its account information and systems were not affected.
What happened in the Gemini data incident?
On December 14, 2022, Gemini’s Product Security Team said some customers had recently been targeted by phishing campaigns believed to stem from an incident at a third-party vendor. Gemini said the incident led to the collection of customer email addresses and partial phone numbers. It stated that Gemini account information and systems were not impacted and that customer funds and accounts remained secure. Gemini’s notice is a company statement, not an independent forensic assessment.

Contemporaneous reporting by The Block described a reported figure of 5.7 million email addresses and partial phone numbers. That count was not included in Gemini’s notice, so it should be treated as a media-reported figure—not a count confirmed by Gemini. The Block’s coverage attributed the number to earlier reporting.
Mozilla Monitor lists December 13, 2022 as the incident date and says the record was added December 16. It lists email addresses and partial phone numbers, attributing its breach data to Have I Been Pwned. This corroborates the listed data types, but does not independently establish that a forum dataset contained 5.7 million unique Gemini users. Mozilla Monitor’s entry should be read with that distinction in mind.

What information was exposed—and what is not established?
Gemini identified customer email addresses and partial phone numbers as the information collected in the vendor incident. The company’s later investor disclosures describe 2022 breaches at third-party vendors and suppliers that exposed some users’ email addresses and phone numbers; a 2025 registration statement refers to email addresses and truncated phone numbers. Those filings reinforce the vendor-breach context, but do not name the vendor or verify the reported forum dataset’s exact size or contents. Gemini’s investor disclosure and its 2025 registration statement do not provide an aggregate count for this event.
The sources cited here do not establish the dataset’s provenance, completeness, or number of unique records. They also do not establish that passwords were exposed. Gemini said its account information was not impacted; that assurance should not be extended beyond what the company stated.

Was my Gemini account hacked?
The reported vendor incident does not, by itself, show that a customer’s Gemini account was accessed. Gemini said its own systems and account information were not impacted. The company also said customers were being targeted by phishing campaigns, which means exposed contact details could help scammers make deceptive messages seem relevant.

If you received an unexpected message claiming to be from Gemini, treat it as untrusted until you verify it through Gemini’s official site or app. Do not use a login link in the message, disclose your password, or share a two-factor authentication code.

How to protect a Gemini account
Use two-factor authentication or a security key
Gemini’s incident notice recommended two-factor authentication and/or hardware security keys. Its current security guidance describes two-factor authentication as required by default for account access and withdrawals, supports hardware keys such as YubiKey, and offers withdrawal-address allowlisting. Settings and device compatibility can vary, so check the options available in your own account before relying on a particular method.
Verify messages through official channels
Gemini says it will never ask for your password or two-factor code. Its guidance also warns about unexpected calls and suspicious account messages. Gemini says it does not offer phone support, so do not trust callers who claim to manage your account or ask you to move funds. Review its Trust and Safety guidance and instructions for identifying genuine communications.

Contact support if you suspect account access
If you see activity you did not authorize or believe someone has accessed your account, go to Gemini directly and use its support route for fraudulent activity or a compromised account. Gemini’s compromised-account guidance directs users to contact support through that route. Do not rely on phone numbers or links sent in an unsolicited message.
