Gautam Adani Tops Two 2026 India Rich Lists, but Not All

Gautam Adani ranks ahead of Mukesh Ambani on Forbes’ and M3M Hurun’s 2026 India rich lists—but Fortune India’s list puts Ambani first. The result depends on which publisher’s estimate you use; the figures are estimates, not a single agreed measure of either man’s wealth.

What each 2026 list says

The three rankings report different orders and wealth estimates. Their figures should be read as publisher-specific estimates, not as synchronized measurements.

Publisher and list Rank and estimate Timing or qualification
Forbes, India’s 100 Richest 2026 Gautam Adani and family: No. 1, $112.7 billion; Mukesh Ambani: No. 2, $86.3 billion Forbes’ 2026 list coverage says Adani returned to No. 1 after three years at No. 2. A comparable snapshot date is not stated in the cited coverage.
M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 Adani and family: No. 1, ₹9.23 lakh crore ($96 billion); Ambani and family: No. 2, ₹8.63 lakh crore ($90 billion) Snapshot as of 24 August 2026; Hurun valued the US dollar at ₹95.63.
Fortune India, 2026 Top 100 Ambani: No. 1, $91.12 billion; Adani: No. 2, $89.49 billion The cited list page does not state a comparable snapshot date.

Forbes and Hurun therefore support the headline that Adani is ahead, while Fortune India’s ranking contradicts it. Forbes’ Adani estimate is also substantially higher than the estimates in the other two lists; it should not be averaged with them or presented as a consensus figure.

Why the rankings disagree

Each publisher produces its own estimate, and the figures may reflect different valuation methods, dates, currency conversions, and treatment of family wealth. The available list coverage does not establish a common methodology or a shared measurement date across all three rankings, so the amounts are not directly interchangeable.

  • Wealth scope: Forbes and Hurun explicitly describe Adani’s wealth with his family; Hurun also presents Ambani’s figure with his family. Keep that wording attached to those estimates.
  • Currency and conversion: Hurun reports rupee values and specifies its conversion rate. Its dollar figures are tied to the 24 August snapshot, not a timeless exchange-rate calculation.
  • List versus live estimate: An annual rich list and a real-time estimate can show different positions without either being a direct update of the other.

A separate Forbes estimate from June

On 5 June 2026, Forbes reported a real-time estimate of $89.2 billion for Adani and $88 billion for Ambani. Forbes attributed Adani’s rise that day to a rally in shares across Adani Group companies and said the move made him Asia’s richest person ahead of Ambani. That was a dated market snapshot, not the same data point as Forbes’ later annual list coverage.

Because share prices and other inputs can change, those June values should not be carried forward as current estimates. More broadly, a rich-list figure is a publisher’s estimate of wealth, not an audited statement of cash that could be immediately realized.

What the comparison does—and does not—tell you

The rankings answer which person or family a particular publisher estimates to be wealthier under its own list process. They do not establish a universal winner, and they are not evidence about the merits of investing in either group’s shares. For a personal-finance decision, treat the rank as context about reported wealth—not as investment guidance.

For additional context, Fortune India says the combined wealth of its 2026 top 100 corresponds to 26.27% of India’s ₹346.36 lakh crore GDP. That is a statistic about the list’s combined wealth, not either billionaire’s individual fortune.
