Gautam Adani overtook Bill Gates for fourth place on Forbes’ real-time billionaire ranking on July 21, 2022, according to a report by Business Standard. The milestone was a dated ranking snapshot—not a statement about Adani’s position today—and Forbes and Bloomberg reported different estimates of their wealth.

What the July 2022 ranking showed

Business Standard reported on July 21, 2022, that Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires list placed Adani fourth, ahead of Gates. Forbes’ estimates in that report were $115.7 billion for Adani and $104.6 billion for Gates.

A separate snapshot appeared in a July 22, 2022 report by The National, citing Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. It put Adani at $112.5 billion and said he was $230 million ahead of Gates. The two reports describe the same broad ranking shift but not the same estimate or snapshot.

Ranking source and report date Adani estimate Gates comparison
Forbes Real-Time Billionaires list, as reported by Business Standard on July 21, 2022 $115.7 billion $104.6 billion
Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as reported by The National on July 22, 2022 $112.5 billion Adani was reported to be $230 million ahead of Gates

These are estimates from wealth rankings, not audited statements of cash or the amount either person could realize by selling every asset. Forbes and Bloomberg calculate and update their own indexes; their figures should be attributed to the provider and date rather than combined into a single definitive number.

Why the estimates differed

The figures came from separate ranking providers and reporting snapshots. A real-time wealth estimate can move as the value of assets changes, and one index’s estimate need not match another’s. The available reports establish that Forbes and Bloomberg showed different numbers; they do not provide enough detail to reconcile the precise calculation behind the gap.

What was happening to the two estimates

The National’s July 22, 2022 Bloomberg-sourced report said Adani had added $36 billion to his estimated fortune during 2022 up to that report. It also attributed a decline in Gates’s estimate in part to accelerated charitable giving and sales of technology shares.

India Today reported that Gates had announced a $20 billion donation to his nonprofit shortly before the Forbes ranking shift. That announcement provides context, but the coverage does not establish it as the sole reason Gates fell behind: the Bloomberg-sourced account also cited share sales and giving.

How long did Adani hold the higher position?

The July headline should be read as a moment in a fast-changing ranking, not a lasting position. Forbes reported on September 14, 2022, that Adani had briefly reached third place, with an estimated net worth of $150.6 billion. That later change underscores why the date and provider matter whenever a billionaire ranking is discussed.

Who is Gautam Adani?

Contemporaneous coverage identified Adani as chair of the Adani Group. NDTV described the conglomerate’s interests as spanning ports, mines, and green energy. This business context helps explain the breadth of the group associated with Adani, but it does not make the ranking estimates equivalent to cash personally held by him.
