GameStop closed 727 U.S. stores in fiscal 2025, according to its annual filing—but the widely reported January 2026 list of more than 470 locations across 43 states was a media compilation based on the company’s store locator, not a confirmed company-wide closure announcement. The figures describe different things, and later reports said some closed stores would reopen.
What the January 2026 closure list said
On January 22, 2026, Fast Company reported that WKYC Studios had assembled a list of more than 470 GameStop locations across 43 states using GameStop’s store locator. Fast Company said it had contacted GameStop for confirmation. That makes the number a dated report about a locator-based list, not a final total confirmed by GameStop.

The wording “over 400 stores in 42 states” does not match the located report’s count of more than 470 in 43 states. The available report also does not establish which exact stores or states the 400-plus wording refers to, whether every listed location was confirmed closed, or whether the list included stores that had shut earlier. Treat the list as a point-in-time guide, not a definitive record of closures.
What GameStop officially reported
In its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026, filed March 24, 2026, GameStop reported closing 727 U.S. stores during fiscal 2025. It counted 1,598 U.S. stores and 2,206 globally as of January 31, 2026. These are company-reported year-end figures, distinct from a list compiled from the store locator.

For comparison, GameStop reported 590 U.S. store closures in fiscal 2024 in its Form 10-K for the year ended February 1, 2025. The reported closure totals were therefore higher in fiscal 2025 than fiscal 2024.

Why GameStop says it reviews stores
GameStop says its annual portfolio review identifies stores for closure using factors that include current market conditions and individual store performance. It also described its domestic footprint as a core part of its logistics infrastructure strategy.

In the fiscal 2025 filing, the company said: “At this time, we do not anticipate closing a significant number of stores in fiscal 2026, as we view our domestic footprint as a core component of our logistics infrastructure strategy.” That is the company’s outlook in the filing; it does not mean no individual stores would close or that every previously listed location would remain shut. The reviewed filing does not attribute the closures specifically to online shopping or digital game distribution.
Some closed stores were later reported to be reopening
A September 11, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report said GameStop announced that “select closed stores” would reopen starting that day. The company did not disclose how many. The report cited a spokesperson’s response to IGN that at least one store was reopening as of September 11. This later development means a closure list should not automatically be read as a permanent, current status for every location; it does not establish that the broader footprint strategy was reversed.

How to check a specific store
A state-level list cannot reliably answer whether a particular store is currently open, closed, or reopening. Check the location directly through GameStop’s store locator or contact the store before traveling, especially when relying on an older list or a closure notice. The January report and the later reopening report are snapshots from different dates, while the annual filing reports fiscal-year totals rather than live store status.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
