On February 18, 2025, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen included “Wokeness and DEI” in a sarcastic pitch about selling the company’s Canadian and French operations. GameStop said it was evaluating international assets but did not explain in detail why it was pursuing those sales. The available reporting documents business pressures such as declining revenue and store closures, but does not show that DEI caused them.
What did Ryan Cohen say about DEI?
On February 18, 2025, Cohen invited prospective buyers to email GameStop and wrote: “High taxes, Liberalism, Socialism, Progressivism, Wokeness and DEI included at no additional cost if you buy today!” Fortune and The Hill reported the post and its wording; a stable, accessible copy of Cohen’s original post was not available in the contemporaneous reporting.
The list framed the proposed sale in political terms, but it did not provide financial evidence or identify DEI as a factor in the company’s operating results.
Why is GameStop selling its Canadian and French operations?
GameStop said it intended to pursue a sale of its operations in Canada and France as part of an evaluation of its international assets. Its brief announcement did not give a detailed reason for selecting those businesses or explain the decision’s financial rationale, according to contemporaneous reporting by The Canadian Press, republished by MarketScreener, and The Hill, syndicated by Yahoo Finance.

The announcement covered GameStop Canada and Micromania France. Fortune reported that GameStop acquired Micromania in 2008. Citing a 2024 SEC filing, Fortune said GameStop had 203 Canadian stores and 332 French stores as of February 2024.
What business pressures were reported?
Fortune reported on February 19, 2025, that GameStop had closed more than 700 locations worldwide since 2020. The figure describes closures across the company, not just in Canada and France. Store counts for the two countries refer to February 2024, as attributed by Fortune to the company’s 2024 SEC filing.

The Canadian Press also reported declining quarterly sales and earnings in its February 18, 2025 coverage. Its accessible account gives sales of US$860.3 million and earnings of US$17.4 million, but does not make the fiscal quarter’s end date clear enough to identify the figures more precisely here.
That report said Cohen had emphasized cost cutting, long-term profitability and a smaller store network at the previous June shareholder meeting. Those priorities offer operational context for restructuring, but they do not establish why GameStop chose these international operations for a potential sale.

Did GameStop say DEI caused its business troubles?
No. Cohen’s post explicitly included “Wokeness and DEI” in its list, but GameStop’s announcement, as described by contemporaneous reporting, said only that it was evaluating international assets and pursuing sales of its Canadian and French operations. The reporting does not establish DEI as the documented reason for those sales.
It is useful to keep three things distinct: GameStop’s stated plan to evaluate international assets, Cohen’s political rhetoric, and reported operating pressures such as store closures and declining sales. The available evidence does not connect DEI causally to those business conditions.
