Game Informer shut down on August 2, 2024, when GameStop laid off its staff. But it is no longer accurate to describe the publication as still closed: former editor-in-chief Matt Miller announced in March 2025 that Gunzilla Games had acquired the brand, the former team had returned, and the website and archive were back.

What happened to Game Informer?

Game Informer began publishing in 1991 and became a GameStop property in 2000. On August 2, 2024, GameStop announced that it was closing the publication and staff were told they had been laid off. The last completed issue was #367, published in June. The following issue was about 70% complete, according to content director Kyle Hilliard, but did not appear. GameSpot’s 2024 report covered the closure and the unfinished issue.

The publication’s website was replaced with a farewell page after the shutdown. Although a later report noted that parts of the site remained accessible through archival tools, the archive was not permanently lost: it returned with the publication’s 2025 relaunch.

Is Game Informer back?

Yes. In March 2025, Miller announced that Gunzilla Games had secured the rights to Game Informer, that the team working there at the time of the closure had returned, and that the publication was operating under Game Informer Inc. The announcement also said the website and archive had been restored. The relaunch announcement described plans to resume daily online coverage and return to print.

Miller said the new owners intended for the editorial team to make coverage decisions independently. That is the arrangement described by the publication’s editor and new owners, not an independent assessment of how it works in practice. The March 2025 announcement also mentioned forthcoming membership and subscription options and account access to more than a decade of past magazine issues. It did not verify current prices or subscription terms.

These comparisons reflect the shutdown and the relaunch announcement, not a verification of every present-day service or subscription option.

Why did GameStop close Game Informer?

The available reporting does not establish a specific reason given by GameStop for its decision. The Minnesota Star Tribune’s 2024 coverage placed the closure in the context of GameStop’s reported financial losses and the shift toward digital game purchases, but that context does not prove what caused the company to close the magazine.

What readers can verify about the return

The relaunch announcement is evidence of the publication’s stated plans, but it does not establish current subscription prices, terms, or availability. Readers interested in subscribing or accessing old issues should check Game Informer’s website for the options currently offered. The announcement described restored access to more than a decade of past magazine issues through an account; it did not say that every issue in the publication’s history was available that way.
