Yes. At Crater of Diamonds State Park near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, visitors can search a diamond-bearing field and keep the diamonds they find. The park’s history stretches from the 40.23-carat Uncle Sam, found in 1924, to Esperanza, an 8.52-carat diamond discovered in 2015. A find is never guaranteed, but the park offers free identification and registration for stones visitors bring to its Diamond Discovery Center.
Where can you hunt for diamonds and keep them?
Crater of Diamonds State Park is in southwestern Arkansas, near Murfreesboro. Visitors can search the park’s diamond field and keep what they find. Arkansas State Parks reported that visitors had found more than 37,377 diamonds since the site became a state park in 1972, a count current as of January 13, 2026. That cumulative total does not indicate how likely any individual visitor is to find a diamond.
The phrase “only place on Earth” is stronger than the available evidence establishes. The supported point is that this Arkansas state park offers a public diamond-search experience in which visitors may keep their finds.
How do Uncle Sam and Esperanza fit into the park’s history?
The two famous diamonds mark very different moments in the site’s history. Uncle Sam was found in 1924, before the area became a state park; Esperanza was discovered by a visitor in 2015.

| Diamond | Carat weight | Discovery | What is known |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncle Sam | 40.23 carats | 1924 | Arkansas State Parks lists it among the site’s notable diamonds. |
| Esperanza | 8.52 carats | 2015 | Bobbie Oskarson found it and named it for her niece, according to TIME’s June 27, 2015 report. |
Park interpreter Waymon Cox described Esperanza as “absolutely stunning, sparkling with a metallic shine, and appears to be an unbroken, capsule-shaped crystal,” in a statement quoted by TIME. The Arkansas Geological Survey gives a separate historical measure: from 1972 through 2006, more than 25,000 diamonds weighing over 4,500 carats were found at the site. That figure covers a defined earlier period and should not be confused with the park’s later cumulative visitor count.
Can you really keep a diamond you find?
Yes. Keeping a find is part of the park’s visitor experience. The park’s 2022 visitor brochure says visitors can take possible finds to the Diamond Discovery Center for free identification and registration. If a stone may be a diamond, staff can help identify it; registration records the find. Identification is useful because a shiny stone is not necessarily a diamond.

- ACCURATE DETECTION : Our professional diamond tester pen (a reliable gem tester) features a sophisticated sensor for precise gemstone identification (Diamonds/Moissanite: 9+ lights + beeps; Jade: 5-6 lights; Crystal/Glass: 5-7 lights). (Jewelry-Only Detection – Not for metal/gold or gold testing kit use)
- STANDARD OPERATION : Insert battery (Gently press the wire and the cables to hold battery will secure it in place) → Power on → MUST preheat 30s (critical) → Adjust indicator to 4th mark (do not skip) → Hold back metal plate → Probe 90° perpendicular to gemstone. Reset to 4th mark before each test
- METAL DETECTION NOTE : Not for metal/gold or gold testing kit use – metal has similar thermal conductivity to diamonds (normal beeping, not a defect). Consistent with title "Jewelry-Only Detection"
- PACKAGE CONTENTS : Diamond tester pen + user manual + 9V battery + testing platform. Read the manual first to maximize accuracy with your diamond detector
- PRECAUTIONS : Avoid windy/cold conditions (15-25℃ recommended); Keep probe perpendicular to gemstone; Turn off power after using this diamond checker
What should you know before searching?
The Arkansas Geological Survey describes the deposit as a diamond-bearing volcanic pipe. Searching is therefore an outdoor activity in a field with natural ground conditions, not a guaranteed-result attraction. The park brochure mentions tool rental, but it dates to 2022; rental availability, prices, admission, hours and field conditions can change.
Check current rules before bringing tools
Arkansas’s public-use rule for the park governs equipment in the search area and took effect January 1, 2025. Read the current rule and confirm details with the park before bringing equipment or buying a kit. The rule page also directs visitors to park information for current operating hours.
